Getting Around from the Port
Upon landing via Zodiac, movement around Cape Royds is limited to walking within the designated areas around the historical sites. Key attractions are generally accessible on foot from the landing point, as this is a preserved historical area rather than a developed town.
Attractions and Activities
The main attractions at Cape Royds are the historic huts left by famed Antarctic explorers, meticulously preserved as they were originally abandoned.
- Shackleton's Hut (Cape Royds): Located directly at Cape Royds, this hut offers a tangible connection to Ernest Shackleton's Nimrod Expedition (1907-1909). Maintained by the New Zealand Antarctic Society, everything remains as it was left, including bales of hay for horses and seal meat intended for the huskies, providing a vivid glimpse into the hardships of early Antarctic life.
- Scott's Hut (Cape Evans): A short distance from Cape Royds (typically accessed via a separate Zodiac landing or specific expedition itinerary), Captain Robert Falcon Scott's hut from his Terra Nova Expedition (1910-1913) is similarly preserved. This site also showcases the extreme conditions faced by pioneers, with original provisions and equipment left intact, thanks to the maintenance efforts of the New Zealand Antarctic Society.
Dining & Shopping
