Linz AustriaCruise Port Guide

Linz, Austria's third-largest city on the upper Danube, has transformed from a heavy industrial center into a creative capital and European Capital of Culture (2009). The city's waterfront has been dramatically revitalized with world-class cultural institutions facing the river. Linz's 19th-century Hauptplatz (main square), one of Central Europe's largest baroque squares, is flanked by the old Rathaus and the Alter Dom cathedral. The city has a complex past — Hitler spent his childhood here and planned to make it the cultural capital of the Nazi empire — which is thoughtfully addressed at the Documentation Center. Today Linz is famous for its cutting-edge digital arts center (Ars Electronica), vibrant food scene, and the Linzer Torte (the world's oldest known cake recipe, dating to 1653).

Getting Around from the Port

Cruise ships dock at the central Danube quay (Gruberstrasse/Urfahr district) within easy walking distance of the historic center and cultural institutions. The Ars Electronica Centre is immediately visible from the dock on the north bank. A pedestrian bridge (Nibelungenbrücke) connects Urfahr to the city center. Tram lines 1 and 2 serve the main sights; day tickets cost €5.20. The Pöstlingbergbahn mountain tram departs from Hauptplatz to the hilltop pilgrimage church (€10.80 return).

Attractions and Activities

Ars Electronica Centre (€17): world-leading museum of digital art, interactive technology, and the future — the centerpiece 'Deep Space 8K' room is stunning. Lentos Kunstmuseum (€10): internationally significant modern art collection with glass facade that glows at night. Pöstlingbergbahn tram (€10.80 return): nostalgic mountain tram ride to 539m hilltop Basilica with panoramic Danube valley views. Hauptplatz: baroque column and historic facades. Old Cathedral (Alter Dom, free): Johann Anton Bruckner was the organist here 1856–1868. Linz Castle (Schlossmuseum, €8): overlooking the Danube, with exhibits from Roman times through the present. Donaupark for riverside walking.

Dining & Shopping

The Linzer Torte (jam lattice tart with almond-spice pastry) is the city's signature — buy at Jindrak or Café Traxlmayr, the oldest coffee house in Linz (1803). Hauptplatz and Altstadt have excellent cafés and restaurants. Try Linzer Torte ice cream at local gelato shops. The Landstrasse shopping street offers mainstream retail. Linz has an excellent Saturday farmers' market (Südbahnhofmarkt) for regional produce. Souvenirs: Linzer Torte (boxed, travels well), Linz City merchandise, and Austrian crystal.
