Getting Around from the Port
From Handelskai dock: U-Bahn (metro) U1 line from Vorgartenstraße or Kaisermühlen-Vienna International Centre stations to Stephansplatz takes approximately 8 minutes, fare €2.40 (single) or €8 (24-hour day pass). From Nussdorf: tram D runs directly to the Ringstraße/Opera area (~25 min, same fare). The Vienna City Card (€17/24hrs or €25/48hrs) includes unlimited public transport plus museum discounts. Taxis from port area to center cost €15–25. The city center is very walkable once you arrive.
Attractions and Activities
Hofburg Palace (€20, Kaiserappartements/Sisi Museum): imperial apartments of Franz Josef and Empress Sisi. Schönbrunn Palace and Gardens (€25–40 depending on tours): summer imperial residence with fountains and hillside Gloriette viewpoint. Belvedere Palace (€17): Klimt's 'The Kiss' and masterpieces of Austrian art. St. Stephen's Cathedral (exterior free, tower/catacombs €6–14): Gothic masterpiece and city symbol. Viennese coffee houses are institutions: try Café Central (historic 1876 interior), Café Hawelka, or Café Landtmann for Melange (Viennese coffee) with Apfelstrudel or Sachertorte. Figlmüller (Bäckerstraße) serves the city's famous oversized Wiener Schnitzel. The Naschmarkt offers everything from grilled sausages to international foods. For wine, Vienna's Heuriger (wine taverns) in Grinzing or Neustift am Walde serve local Grüner Veltliner and Riesling from the Viennese vineyards. Shopping: Mariahilfer Straße for mainstream retail; Kohlmarkt and Graben for luxury; Spittelberg artisan quarter for Austrian crafts. Weather
Vienna on the Danube has a continental climate with the river cruise season from April to October. Summer temperatures average 68°F–79°F (20–26°C) and are ideal for exploring this magnificent capital, while spring and autumn offer beautiful conditions with fewer crowds. Pack layers for shoulder seasons, lightweight clothing for summer, and a compact umbrella.
Safety
Vienna is extremely safe by global standards. Petty theft can occur on crowded trams and at tourist sites — secure your belongings. The city is very clean and well-organized. Medical facilities are world-class. Tap water (sourced from Alpine springs) is excellent drinking quality.
Currency and Language
Euro (€). ATMs ubiquitous throughout the city. Credit cards universally accepted. Cash useful for traditional coffee houses and small vendors. Tipping: round up at cafés; 5–10% at restaurants.
