Maceió is a sugar seaport city on Brazil's Atlantic coast, known for its beautiful beachfront and relaxed atmosphere. Ships dock at the Port of Jaraguá, which is conveniently located very close to the city center. While the city's historical sights are few, Maceió offers stunning beaches, delicious local cuisine, and a chance to soak up the sun. A notable feature is the protecting coral reef and natural swimming pools located just offshore.
Getting Around from the Port
The Port of Jaraguá is very close to downtown Maceió, about a 5-minute drive or a pleasant 15-20 minute walk. At the dock, you'll find numerous stands offering independent transportation services (taxis, vans) for hire to reach smaller or more distant beaches. To reach the popular beaches like Praia de Ponta Verde (5km from the city center) or Jatiúca (6km), you'll need a short drive via taxi or hired transport. From Praia de Pajuçara, traditional jangadas (rafts) sail out 2km at low tide to natural pools formed by the reef. A trip costs R$15 per person and can be arranged directly with any boat captain. Warning: Praia do Sobral and Praia da Avenida, which are closer to the city center, are unfortunately polluted and not recommended for swimming.

- From Praia de Pajuçara, take a jangada (raft) trip out 2km at low tide to the stunning natural pools. The cost is R$15. Be aware that on busy days, these pools can become very crowded, which may cloud the water for snorkeling, and floating bars might be present. Allow 2-3 hours including travel.

- This attractive colonial town overlooks Lagoa Manguaba. Here you can explore the 17th-century Convento do Sao Francisco and the Igreza Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Conceicao (1783). This trip would require dedicated transportation and would take up a significant portion of your port time, likely 4-5 hours round trip including exploration.

Maceió is renowned for its vibrant handicrafts and intricate embroidery. A great place to find souvenirs is Cheiro de Terra, a large trade complex offering fine laces, woven clothes, curtains, and jewelry. Basic store and business hours typically run from 9 am to 6 pm, with an extended lunch break from around noon to 2 pm. Many museums are closed on Mondays. For dining, you'll find plenty of opportunities to enjoy a great meal and local specialties, especially along the beachfront areas. Communication Tip: While exploring, be aware that cafes offering free WiFi for customers are sparse.
