Cruise ships dock at a commercial port that is somewhat run-down. There is nothing of interest within walking distance of the dock itself.

Getting Around from the Port

Upon arrival, only a limited number of taxis are allowed directly by the ship. However, a wider selection of metered and reasonably priced taxis can be found approximately 200 meters further at the port entrance. Shuttles are also available. For independent exploration, taking a taxi is recommended. A taxi ride to the Mercado Central (Central Market) is a good starting point, and Praia do Futuro is another popular destination, located in the opposite direction from town but not a long ride.

You'll find a wide array of goods including indigenous artwork, pottery, basketry, bamboo items, jewelry, beachwear, clothing, and local cashews. The area is particularly famous for its lace products. The market is equipped with elevators, ramps, and restrooms on each level.
  • Praia do Futuro: For swimming and enjoying the beach, head to Praia do Futuro by taxi. It's advisable to avoid the somewhat polluted beach areas in the Meireles hotel sector. When you arrive, try to find a popular "barraca" (an open-air restaurant or bar) to ensure you have amenities and a lively atmosphere. Note that beaches generally become more active after 5 pm when temperatures cool.
  • Coastal Beach Day-Trips: Fortaleza is a popular base for day-trips to stunning beaches located along the coast to both the east and west. Numerous local travel agencies, minivan operators, and dune-buggy services near the Meireles tourist office can arrange these excursions.
  • Local Events (seasonal): If your visit aligns, you might experience Fortaleza's lively out-of-season Carnaval during the last week of July, the Iemanjá festival celebrating the sea goddess on August 15 at Praia do Futuro, or the Regata de Jangadas, a traditional sailing regatta held between Praia do Meireles and Praia Mucuripe during the second half of July.
