Alter Do Chao BrazilCruise Port Guide
Getting Around from the Port
Upon tendering ashore, you will arrive at the heart of Alter do Chao. The town itself is quite compact, with only a few paved streets. The riverfront area has been recently refurbished, featuring a new promenade (orla fluvial) with stairs, rails, and a dock. This makes it easier and safer to catch a rowboat to Ilha do Amor. Walking along the wide walkway with benches is a pleasant way to explore the riverfront. For destinations further afield, such as the Floresta Nacional do Tapajós, local transport options would be needed, though specific costs are not provided.
Attractions and Activities
- Ilha do Amor Sandbar: The main draw, this beautiful sandbar is wadeable during the dry season. From the newly refurbished dock area, you can easily catch a rowboat to reach it. When walking in the water, especially in more remote areas, remember to shuffle your feet to avoid stingrays, which only sting if stepped on.
- Amazon Jungle Exploration: From Ilha do Amor, you have the opportunity to venture into the Amazon jungle on foot. This allows for wildlife spotting and observing the diverse plant species native to the region.
- Floresta Nacional do Tapajós (FLONA Tapajós): This national forest offers opportunities for hiking and canoeing amidst beautiful natural scenery. The town provides easy access to this protected area.
- Green Lake: Take time to visit the "Green Lake" and witness its intriguing waters, which shift in color from blue to green throughout the day.
Dining & Shopping
Near the jetty where you disembark, you'll find an open-air market. This market is a great spot to browse and purchase Indian and regional wares, which make for unique souvenirs of your visit. Specific restaurants or local specialties are not detailed, but as a beach resort, dining options are available.
Weather
Alter do Chão has a hot, tropical climate on the Tapajós River with temperatures between 79°F and 95°F (26°C to 35°C) year-round. Cruise visits occur during the June through November low-water season when the famous white-sand beaches and freshwater pools are at their most spectacular. Pack very lightweight clothing, strong insect repellent, sunscreen, and a light rain layer.
Safety
A key safety consideration in Alter do Chao, particularly when visiting more remote beaches, is the presence of stingrays. These creatures only sting when stepped on. To minimize risk, it is highly recommended to shuffle your feet when walking in the water.
Currency and Language
The local currency is the Brazilian Real. Portuguese is the spoken language. While there are a couple of internet cafes, they typically have only two terminals each.
