Palmeira Cruise Port Guide
Palmeira is a tender port on Sal Island, Cape Verde. Ships will anchor offshore, and passengers are brought to the concrete structure of the working port via tender boats. This area is surrounded by warehouses and sits a short distance away from Palmeira village itself, which functions as a fishing harbor and import station, though it is currently improving its tourist amenities. Sal Island is generally flat, dry, and barren, but don't let the initial brown landscape deter you; the magnificent beaches, particularly in Santa Maria, are a major draw further south.
Getting Around from the Port
Upon tendering ashore, you'll find the port area is not directly within Palmeira village and is designed for commercial activities. Walking to the village from the tender drop-off is not practical.
- Taxi: Taxis are the primary mode of transport for independent exploration. The island's capital, Espargos, is approximately 4km southeast of Palmeira port. A taxi ride between the port and Espargos (or the airport) typically costs about CVE500. For destinations further afield like Santa Maria, expect a higher fare. It's advisable to negotiate the fare before starting your journey.
- Tours: Consider comparing your cruise line's organized tours with options from local third-party excursion providers, especially for getting to more distant attractions efficiently.
Attractions and Activities
With 8-10 hours in port, focus on the island's key highlights. Taxis will be your main way to get around.
- Santa Maria Beach (Approx. 20-30 min drive from port): This is the island's main tourist hub and "center of the action." You'll find long stretches of white sandy beach, crystal clear waters ideal for swimming and various water sports. The area also features rapidly developing hotels and resorts.
- Espargos (Approx. 5-10 min drive from port): The capital of Sal Island, located about 4km southeast of Palmeira. Here you can find local shops, bars, and restaurants, often featuring live music in the evenings. A taxi ride from the port to Espargos costs around CVE500.
- Explore Palmeira Village (Not easily walkable from port, short taxi ride): While the port itself is commercial, a short taxi ride will take you to the actual fishing village of Palmeira. You can observe local life at the harbor and perhaps find a local eatery.
Shopping
Beyond the port, Espargos offers a selection of shops, bars, and restaurants. For a more tourist-oriented shopping experience, Santa Maria provides a wider array of options, including souvenirs.
- Opening Hours: Generally, shops operate Monday-Friday from 08:00/08:30 to 12:00/12:30 and 14:00/14:30 to 18:00/18:30, and on Saturdays from 08:30 to 12:00. Many shops close early on Fridays. Banks often close in the afternoon. Restaurants typically open from 19:00 to 23:00. Note that everything is closed on public holidays and Sundays.
Safety
No specific safety concerns or areas to avoid are highlighted for Palmeira or Sal Island in general beyond standard travel precautions.
Currency and Language
The local currency is the Cape Verde Escudo (CVE). The exchange rate is approximately 1 Euro = 113 Escudos, though hotels and banks may offer a slightly less favorable rate. While credit cards are increasingly accepted at more up-market hotels, not all establishments take them. MasterCard and Visa are the most widely accepted cards. It's advisable to carry some local currency for smaller purchases, taxis, and places that may not accept cards.
The official language is Portuguese.
