Dubrovnik CroatiaCruise Port Guide
Getting Around from the Port
From Gruž harbour, buses 1A and 1B run to the Old Town (Pile Gate) every 10–20 minutes for approximately €1.73 per ride (pay driver in cash or use contactless). Taxis cost €10–15 to Old Town. Walking takes about 35–40 minutes along the waterfront. During peak season, expect crowds — arrive early. The Old Town itself is car-free; the cable car to Mount Srđ (€20 return) departs from just outside the Ploče Gate.
Attractions and Activities
Walk the City Walls (€40, ~2 hours) for panoramic views over the red-tiled rooftops and Adriatic. Visit the Game of Thrones filming locations including Fort Lovrijenac ('Red Keep') and Trsteno Arboretum ('King's Landing gardens'). Take a boat excursion to the Elafiti Islands (Lopud, Šipan, Koločep) for €40–60. Day trip to Korčula island by catamaran or ferry. The Dubrovnik Card (€35/day) covers public transport and several museum entries. Mount Srđ cable car offers the best city panorama. Sea kayaking around the city walls is also popular.
Dining & Shopping
The Stradun is lined with cafés and restaurants; prices are tourist-level. For more authentic dining, head to the backstreets — try Konoba Dalmatino or Nishta (vegetarian). The Old Town market sells local lavender products, olive oil, and Dubrovnik's distinctive Moreška dance souvenirs. Dubrovnik honey wine (Orahovac) and Pelješac wines are excellent local buys. Gundulić Square hosts a morning market. Avoid eating right on Stradun for better value.
Weather
Dubrovnik enjoys a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers between 82–91°F (28–33°C) during the peak cruise season from May to October. Light clothing, sunscreen, and sunglasses are essential in summer; a light jacket for evenings is useful. The extraordinary UNESCO World Heritage walled city, the magnificent city walls walk with its Adriatic views, the old port, and the surrounding Elaphiti Islands make Dubrovnik consistently ranked among the most beautiful cities in the world.
Safety
Dubrovnik is very safe for tourists. The main concern is the intense heat and summer overcrowding — the city actively manages daily visitor caps. Wear sunscreen and stay hydrated. Pickpocketing is rare but watch your belongings on crowded buses. The Old Town has very steep and uneven limestone steps; sturdy shoes are essential. Be respectful of residential areas — many locals still live in the Old Town.
Currency and Language
Croatia uses the Euro (€) since 2023. ATMs are widely available in Gruž and the Old Town. Credit cards are accepted at most restaurants and shops. Small cash purchases (bus fares, market stalls) require coins/small bills.
