Getting Around from the Port
Upon tendering ashore at Carcass Island, all exploration is done on foot. Due to the island's remote and pristine nature, there is no public transport, taxis, or rental car services available. The various birdwatching spots, beaches, and scenic viewpoints are all accessible via walking trails. Prepare for moderate walking over varied terrain, including sandy beaches and grassy hills.
Attractions and Activities
Given the island's unique ecosystem and lack of commercial development, the primary activities revolve around nature observation and walks. These can be enjoyed independently:
- Birdwatching Walks: Explore the luxuriant hedges and trees which provide a home to small birds such as the Cobb's wren, Black-chinned siskin, and Falklands thrush. The absence of predators like cats and rats makes this an ideal environment for observing these species up close.
- Penguin and Seabird Viewing: Head to the sandy beaches, rolling hills, and low cliffs. These natural platforms offer superb opportunities to view a multitude of sea and shore birds. Look out for breeding or feeding populations of Gentoo and Magellanic penguins, Yellow-billed pintail, Flightless steamer duck, Magellanic oystercatcher, Rock shag, Striated caracara, and Red-backed hawk.
- Coastal Walks: Enjoy scenic walks along the island's diverse coastline, taking in the pristine beaches and dramatic cliffs while looking out for marine mammals and other wildlife.

There are no dedicated shopping facilities, restaurants, or cafes available on Carcass Island. Visitors should plan to return to their cruise ship for all dining and retail needs. It is advisable to bring any necessary snacks and water with you from the ship for your time ashore.
Weather
Carcass Island in the northwest Falklands has a cold, windy sub-Antarctic climate with temperatures between 37°F and 55°F (3°C to 13°C). Cruise season runs October through March when the island's gentoo and Magellanic penguin colonies and abundance of bird life are at their best. Pack windproof and waterproof layers, warm base layers, hat, gloves, and sturdy waterproof footwear.
