Bandol Cruise Port Guide
Bandol is a charming seaside resort in France, known for its natural beauty, including sand beaches, cliffs, inlets, and creeks, surrounded by pine and willow hills. With a population of 8,400, Bandol has a history of attracting famous visitors like Thomas Mann, Aldous Huxley, and Marcel Pagnol. This is a tender port; cruise passengers will be brought directly to the center of town by tender boats. The port itself is equipped to shelter 1,500 boats, from yachts to professional fishing vessels.
Getting Around from the Port
Upon arrival by tender, you'll be directly in Bandol's town center, making it immediately walkable for local exploration. For excursions outside Bandol, the train station is approximately 1 km away from the port.
- To Cassis: Trains depart roughly every 30 minutes from Bandol's train station, with a journey time of about 20 minutes to Cassis.
- From Cassis Train Station to Town: Be aware that Cassis train station is 3 km (1.9 miles) from the town's harbor area. This is a good 40-minute downhill walk along a busy main road. Taxi numbers are posted opposite the ticket office at Cassis station if you prefer not to walk.
Attractions and Activities
- Visit Ile de Bendor: Take a short 7-minute boat ride offshore to the car-free island of Bendor. This island was purchased in the 1950s by the Ricard family (of pastis fame) and offers a unique escape.
- Explore Bandol's Vineyards: Bandol is renowned for its wines. Sample the powerful yet velvety red wines, the fruity and racy rosés, or the full-bodied and fine white wines. Bandol wines are considered among the best in the Midi region and France.
- Day Trip to Cassis: This attractive town on the Mediterranean coast is famous for its dramatic cliffs and "calanques" (narrow, steep-sided inlets). Cassis also produces its own celebrated white and rosé wines. Access Cassis by taking a 20-minute train ride from Bandol (train station is 1 km from the port). Remember to account for the 3 km (1.9 miles) distance and 40-minute walk from Cassis train station to its harbor, or consider a taxi.
