Biarritz FranceCruise Port Guide
Getting Around from the Port
Cruise ships typically anchor offshore and tender to the Biarritz harbor area (Port des Pêcheurs), or may dock at the nearby Port de Bayonne (8 km north). Biarritz's beaches, town center, and main attractions are within easy walking distance of the tender point. Taxis and organized excursions handle transfers to Bayonne, the Basque villages of the interior (Saint-Jean-de-Luz, Espelette), or the Spanish border at Hendaye.
Attractions and Activities
- Grande Plage and Surf Culture: Biarritz's famous beach is backed by the casino and elegant hotels; beach volleyball, surfing, and promenading are the main activities.
- Musée de la Mer (Aquarium): A well-regarded marine museum and aquarium focusing on Basque coastal species; the shark tank and seal pool are highlights.
- Hôtel du Palais: Even non-guests can admire the exterior and terrace of Empress Eugénie's original imperial villa, now the most illustrious hotel on the Basque coast.
- Saint-Jean-de-Luz: A beautifully preserved Basque fishing town 15 km south with a protected harbor, excellent pintxos bars, and fine beaches.
- Bayonne Old Town and Musée Basque: The medieval old town of Bayonne and the Musée Basque offer excellent Basque cultural content; the town's dark chocolate tradition (Bayonne is France's chocolate capital) makes the bakeries unmissable.
- Espelette Village and Pepper Tour: A 30-km inland drive to the village famous for producing the red Espelette pepper — the Basque region's defining spice — during harvest time (October).
Dining & Shopping
Biarritz has exceptional dining. Les Halles market hall in central Biarritz offers fresh Basque produce, charcuterie, cheeses, and a dozen restaurant stalls. Restaurant Campagne et Gourmandise and Chez Albert near the fishing harbor are local institutions for seafood. Pintxos bars abound in both Biarritz and Saint-Jean-de-Luz. Shopping highlights include Espelette pepper products, Basque linen (espadrilles, tablecloths with the characteristic red stripe), Bayonne chocolate, and quality surfers' boutiques.
Weather
Biarritz on the Bay of Biscay has a temperate oceanic climate with warm summers between 68–79°F (20–26°C) during the cruise season from spring to fall. Atlantic weather is variable and rain showers can occur even in summer, so a light waterproof jacket is always worth having. The magnificent Grande Plage, surfing culture, Belle Époque casino architecture, and celebrated Basque cuisine make Biarritz one of the most glamorous resort ports on the Atlantic.
Safety
Biarritz is a safe resort city. Ocean swimming conditions vary — check flags on the beach and be aware of Atlantic riptides and swells, which can be powerful even on calm-looking days. Jellyfish occasionally drift into the bay in late summer. The cliffs along the Côte des Basques erode regularly; heed any warning signs.
