Bamberg GermanyCruise Port Guide

Bamberg is one of Germany's most perfectly preserved medieval cities and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Remarkably undamaged in WWII, it retains its ancient city structure of 1,000-year-old buildings arranged around three hills. The city is famous for its unique smoked beer (Rauchbier), brewed to a recipe unchanged since 1405, and for its stunning Romanesque-Gothic Imperial Cathedral housing the tomb of Pope Clement II (the only papal tomb north of the Alps). The Am Kranen harbor area and the island Altes Rathaus (Old Town Hall) built on an artificial island in the Regnitz river are among Germany's most photographed sights. The city is sometimes called 'Franconian Rome' for its seven hills.

Getting Around from the Port

Cruise ships dock at the Am Kranen harbor on the Regnitz river, within a 5-minute walk of the historic center, island Rathaus, and first hills of the old town. The compact UNESCO Old Town is entirely walkable — the Cathedral Hill (Domberg) is a 10-minute walk uphill from the harbor. Bamberg's charm lies in its walkability: no public transit is needed for the main sights. Taxis are available at the harbor for less mobile visitors.

Attractions and Activities

Altes Rathaus (Old Town Hall, €5): the bizarre 14th-century town hall built on a tiny island in the Regnitz river — walk across both bridges to view it from all sides. Bamberger Dom (Imperial Cathedral, free): Romanesque-Gothic cathedral with the famous Bamberger Reiter equestrian statue and Pope Clement II's tomb. Schlenkerla (free to enter): the legendary smoke-beer brewery/tavern in a 1405 building — drink Rauchbier on-site with Schäuferle (smoked pork shoulder). Alte Hofhaltung (Old Court, €5): former imperial and episcopal palace. New Residence (Neue Residenz, €7): prince-bishop's palace with rose garden and exceptional views. Klein Venedig ('Little Venice'): walk along the medieval fisherman's cottages with flower boxes lining the Regnitz. Michaelsberg Monastery (Franconian Brewing Museum, €3) atop the third hill.

Dining & Shopping

Bamberg has more breweries per capita than any other city in Germany — 9 independent breweries for ~70,000 people. Schlenkerla Rauchbier (smoked lager) is the iconic drink; Mahrs Bräu's 'Ungespundet' (unfiltered lager) is also exceptional. Bamberg Zwiebel (onion pastry) and Bamberger Hörnla (crescent-shaped potato) are local specialties. The Grüner Markt (Green Market) in the city center has daily produce. Souvenirs: Schlenkerla Rauchbier to take home, Bamberger Bier merchandise, local pottery, and Fränkische Lebkuchen (Franconian gingerbread).

Weather

Bamberg is a river cruise destination on the Regnitz and Main-Danube Canal, visited during the spring-to-fall season with warm summer temperatures between 68–82°F (20–28°C). Continental weather means warm summers with occasional thunderstorms, so a light rain jacket and layers for evenings are always useful. The UNESCO World Heritage old town with its remarkable medieval cathedral and bishop's residence is one of Germany's finest historic cities.
