Regensburg GermanyCruise Port Guide

Regensburg is one of Germany's best-preserved medieval cities and a UNESCO World Heritage Site — remarkably, it survived World War II almost completely intact. Founded by the Romans as Castra Regina in 179 AD, its Old Town retains its medieval street grid, patrician towers, and the magnificent 12th-century Stone Bridge (Steinerne Brücke), the oldest bridge in Germany still in use. The city's Gothic Cathedral (Dom St. Peter) is home to the world-famous Domspatzen boys' choir. Regensburg served as the seat of the Holy Roman Empire's Perpetual Diet (parliament) from 1663 to 1806. Today it's a lively university city with outstanding food, beer, and an internationally acclaimed sausage kitchen dating to 1135.

Getting Around from the Port

Cruise ships dock at Werftstrasse (the shipyard quay), approximately 1.5km west of the Old Town — a pleasant 15–20 minute walk along the Danube embankment, or a short taxi ride (~€8). Some smaller vessels may dock closer, at the Eiserne Brücke (Iron Bridge) area adjacent to the Old Town. The historic center is compact and entirely walkable; no public transit is needed for most sights.

Attractions and Activities

Steinerne Brücke (Stone Bridge, free): walk across the 900-year-old engineering marvel for city views. Historic Sausage Kitchen (Historische Wurstküche, est. 1135): world's oldest public sausage kitchen still in operation — queue for 6 or 12 grilled sausages with sauerkraut and sweet Senf (mustard) beside the bridge. Dom St. Peter Cathedral (free): Gothic masterpiece; check times for Domspatzen choir rehearsals. Altes Rathaus (€5): medieval town hall and Imperial Diet chambers with original torture chamber. Schloss Thurn und Taxis guided tour (€22): one of Europe's great still-inhabited palaces. Walhalla Monument day trip (12km east by boat or bus, €5): Bavarian Parthenon with 65 busts of Germanic heroes, dramatic cliffside Danube views.

Dining & Shopping

The Historische Wurstküche is the iconic meal — eat riverside and watch boats navigate the bridge. Bratwurst and white Radler (beer-lemonade) are local staples. Regensburg's Saturday market at Alter Kornmarkt sells regional cheeses, meats, and produce. The Old Town has wine bars serving Bavarian vintages. Shop for Bavarian folk crafts (painted glass, carved wood), local schnapps, and hand-crafted items along Obere and Untere Bachgasse. The large pedestrian zone between the cathedral and old market has mainstream retail.

Weather

Regensburg on the Danube is a major river cruise stop visited from spring to fall, with warm summer temperatures between 68–82°F (20–28°C). Continental central European weather brings warm sunny days and occasional afternoon thunderstorms, so a light rain jacket is always useful. The UNESCO World Heritage old town with its 12th-century Stone Bridge and remarkable medieval merchant towers is one of Germany's best-preserved historic city centers.
