Speyer GermanyCruise Port Guide

Speyer is one of Germany's oldest cities, founded by the Romans as Noviomagus around 10 BC and continuously inhabited since. Its UNESCO-listed Kaiserdom (Imperial Cathedral) is the world's largest surviving Romanesque church and the burial place of eight Holy Roman Emperors — a building of extraordinary scale and historical gravity. Speyer was also one of the three great medieval Jewish communities of the Rhine (the 'SchUM' cities — Speyer, Worms, Mainz), and its Jewish heritage is now UNESCO-recognized. The city claims to be the birthplace of the pretzel (Brezel). Its Rhine waterfront hosts the remarkable Technik Museum, which displays a Boeing 747, a submarine, and a space shuttle replica in its outdoor display.

Getting Around from the Port

Rhine cruise ships dock approximately 1.5km northwest of the city center, requiring a 20-minute walk along the Rhine promenade or a short taxi/shuttle ride (~€5–8). The Cathedral and historic center are very walkable once you arrive. The Technik Museum is close to the dock area. City bus lines connect the port to the Altstadt. The historic Altstadt is flat and walkable.

Attractions and Activities

Kaiserdom Imperial Cathedral (free entry, crypt €4): the world's largest surviving Romanesque church — walk the entire nave to grasp the enormous scale; the crypt contains imperial sarcophagi. Jewish Quarter excavations (free outdoor; €7 for Judenhof): UNESCO-listed medieval mikve (ritual bath, 12th century) and courtyard, among Europe's best-preserved Jewish heritage sites. Technik Museum Speyer (€18): extraordinary outdoor and indoor collection including a Boeing 747, a real submarine (WWII U-9), and a European Space Agency Buran space shuttle (you can walk through all of them). Historical Museum of the Palatinate (€6): excellent archaeological collections. Pretzel Museum: Speyer's claim to the pretzel birthplace (with competing claim from Markt Beuren).

Dining & Shopping

Speyer's Maximilianstraße (main pedestrian street linking Cathedral to Rhine) has restaurants and cafés. Try Pfälzer Saumagen (stuffed pig's stomach — Chancellor Kohl's favorite dish), Leberknödel soup, and Pfälzer Riesling and Dornfelder wines. The Cathedral square has several options for lunch. Local Brezel (pretzels) from the bakeries. The Brezeln and Palatinate wine are the signature souvenirs. Saturday market on Maximilianstraße. Wine merchants near the cathedral sell Palatinate Riesling at excellent prices.

Weather

Speyer on the Rhine is a river cruise destination visited from spring to fall with warm central European summer temperatures between 68–82°F (20–28°C). Continental weather brings warm days and occasional rain, so a light layer and packable umbrella are always useful. The magnificent Speyer Cathedral, the largest surviving Romanesque church in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage site, is the unmissable highlight of this historic German city.
