Getting Around from the Port
The port of Souda is approximately 7-8 km (4.3-5 miles) from the center of Chania. Walking to Chania Old Town is not practical (1.5-2 hours one-way).
- Cruise Line Shuttles: Most cruise lines provide shuttle bus service directly from the pier to a drop-off point near Chania Old Town (often the Central Market or 1866 Square). This is often the most convenient option, though a fee may apply.
- Taxis: Taxis are usually available at the port entrance. A taxi ride to Chania Old Town costs approximately €15-€20 and takes about 15-20 minutes, depending on traffic. Prices should be agreed upon before departure.
- Local Bus (KTEL): A public bus stop is located a short walk (5-10 minutes) from the cruise terminal entrance. Buses run frequently to Chania Central Bus Station. The fare is typically around €2.00-€2.50 one-way, and the journey takes about 20-30 minutes. From the Central Bus Station, Chania Old Town is a 10-15 minute walk.
- Car Rental: Several local and international car rental agencies have offices in Chania. It's advisable to pre-book if you plan to rent a car, especially during peak season. Some agencies may offer port delivery, but picking up in Chania town is more common. Rental prices start from around €40-€60 per day. This option offers the most flexibility for exploring beyond Chania.
