Ios GreeceCruise Port Guide
Getting Around from the Port
As your ship docks directly in the center of town, the immediate port area and the heart of Ios town (Hora) are easily walkable. For destinations further afield, such as the pre-historic settlement of Skarkos or Manganari Beach, local buses or taxis would be required. Specific routes, frequencies, or fares are not provided, so inquire locally upon arrival.
Attractions and Activities
With 8-10 hours in port, Ios offers a relaxed pace focusing on its natural beauty and charming main town.
- Explore Hora (Chora): The island's main town is a short walk from the port. Wander through its narrow, winding streets, admire the traditional Cycladic architecture, and discover some of the island's 365 churches nestled on the hillsides. Enjoy panoramic views, especially around sunset.
- Visit Skarkos: Head inland to the significant pre-historic settlement of Skarkos, an archaeological site showcasing early Cycladic life. This site is not within walking distance and would require local transport (taxi or bus).
- Relax at Manganari Beach: Located on the south coast, Manganari is renowned as one of Ios's most beautiful beaches, perfect for swimming and sunbathing. Reaching Manganari will require local transport (bus or taxi) from the port or Hora.
Dining & Shopping
Around the port and in Hora, you'll find various dining and shopping options. Local retail and specialty shops typically operate Monday to Friday from 9:00 AM to 1:30 PM and again from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM, with Saturday hours from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Supermarkets are generally open Monday to Friday from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM and Saturdays from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM. During the summer months, many tourist shops and convenience stores maintain extended hours, often from dawn until well after midnight. Look for local crafts, souvenirs, and traditional Greek products.
Weather
Íos in the Cyclades has a hot, dry Mediterranean summer between 82–91°F (28–33°C) during the cruise season from May to October. Light clothing, sunscreen, and sunglasses are essential; the Meltemi wind provides cooling breezes. The legendary tomb of Homer (though unverified), the extraordinary Koumbara and Mylopotas beaches, and the traditional Chora village perched above the harbor make Ios one of the most vibrant and visually appealing young islands in the Cyclades.
