Mitilini, also known as Mytilene, is a charming port city on the island of Lesbos, built around its picturesque harbor. Cruise ships tender passengers directly to the port, placing you right at the heart of the city. With 8-10 hours in port, you'll have ample time to explore the city's historical sites, unique shopping streets, and nearby attractions.
Getting Around from the Port
The city center and its main attractions are easily accessible from the tender landing.
- Walking: The impressive Mitilini Castle, which looms over the harbor, is about a 15-minute uphill walk (not steeply) from where the tenders land.
- Local Buses: Buses run from the port and cover the main roads throughout the city. Tickets can be purchased at local coffee shops or small deli shops. The main bus stop and information station is located within Mitilini city center.
- Taxis: Taxis are generally inexpensive. Yellow taxis are based in Mitilini and typically use meters. Grey taxis are from outside Mitilini; they rarely use meters and instead charge fixed fares for trips connecting various locations, usually around 1 Euro per kilometer.
Attractions and Activities
- Mitilini Castle (Kastro): This extensive ruin is perched on a steep hill north of the city and is a must-see. It's a 15-minute uphill walk from the tender landing and offers superb views of the city and sea from its ramparts. Founded by Justinian in the 6th century A.D., it was later restored and enlarged by the Genoese in 1737 and further modified by the Turks. Look for fragments of ancient marble columns embedded in its walls, taken from a 7th-century B.C. Temple of Apollo. Don't miss the underground cistern at the north end, an echoing chamber with domed vaults reflected in a pool below. Entrance fee is a few Euros. In summer, it sometimes hosts performing arts events.
- Molivos (Molyvos): For a longer excursion (requiring a taxi or bus), consider visiting Molivos, an ancient town also known as Methymna. It's famous for its Gattilusi Castle and well-preserved traditional architecture.
Shopping
Stroll along Ermou, the main shopping street that stretches from the south to the north port. You'll find a variety of shops, and its narrow side lanes are filled with antique shops and old mansions. The Agora, the main market, is located at the northern end of Ermou, near the north harbor. Duty-free shopping is available. Retail and specialty shops typically open from 9 AM to 1:30 PM and again from 5 PM to 9 PM on weekdays, and 9 AM to 2 PM on Saturdays. Tourist shops and convenience stores, especially during summer, often have extended hours, staying open from dawn until well after midnight.
- Food: On the southern end of Ermou, you can explore the bustling fish market, which offers fresh catches like sardines, mullet, and octopus.
Safety
While exploring Mitilini, be aware that taxi drivers are known for driving 'like crazy'. Always use metered yellow taxis when possible for local trips.
