Myrina is the main town and port of Limnos (also known as Lemnos), the eighth largest island in the Aegean Sea, situated in the North Aegean between Lesvos and Samothraki. Limnos is an island of volcanic origin with a coastline spanning 260 km. Cruise ships typically anchor offshore, and passengers are tendered ashore. The port area, near the St. Nikolaos chapel, is currently under construction.

Getting Around from the Port

The port area (St. Nikolaos) is approximately a 20-minute walk from Myrina's town center. For passenger convenience, a minibus service has recently been introduced, providing routes between the port area and the town center. Taxis and rental vehicles are available on the island for exploring further afield. Additionally, boats can be hired to reach various beaches around the island.

  • Myrina Castle: Perched high above the town, the medieval castle offers breathtaking panoramic views of the island. On exceptionally clear days, you may even be able to spot the Chalkidiki peninsula (including Mount Athos) and other surrounding islands like Samothrace and Imvros. The castle is easily accessible once you are in Myrina town.
  • Archaeological Museum: Also located in Myrina, the archaeological museum is worth a visit to delve into the island's rich history and view artifacts discovered locally.
  • Beach Hopping: Limnos boasts a selection of sandy beaches within a short distance of Myrina. Many are found along the south and west coasts, which are generally more sheltered from the strong winds that often blow from the northeast. Popular choices include Riha Nera, Platy, Thanos, and Evgatis. For those willing to venture further, Gomati beach is to the north and Keros to the east. Boats are available for transport to these coastal spots.
  • Trekking: For nature lovers, the island offers a wide range of excursions tailored for trekking, allowing you to explore its unique landscapes and seascapes.

Myrina's bustling Market Street extends directly from the harbor and is the primary area for shopping and finding local goods. Here you can browse a variety of shops selling local products, unique souvenirs, and traditional Greek items. Shopping Hours to Note:

  • Retail Stores & Specialty Shops: Operate Monday to Friday from 9:00 AM to 1:30 PM, then reopen from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM. On Saturdays, they are typically open from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM.
  • Supermarkets: Open Monday to Friday from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM, and on Saturdays from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
  • Tourist Shops & Convenience Stores: During the peak summer months, these establishments often do not adhere to fixed official hours and are usually open from dawn until well after midnight.
