Nafplion, also known as Navplion or Nauplia, is a charming and elegant port town located on the eastern shores of the Peloponnese. Your cruise ship will anchor offshore, and you will be tendered to the pier of the busy harbor. Upon disembarking, turn right, and within just a few meters, you'll find yourself in the heart of the walkable Old Town. This area is rich with cafes, restaurants, and upscale tourist shops.
Nafplion holds historical significance, once known by its Venetian name, Napoli di Romania, which derived from the Greek "nea poli" meaning "new town." While fishing and transport continue, tourism is now the primary industry. The town boasts a stunning setting with marble pavements, homogeneous architecture, and three notable fortresses: Akronafplía and Palamídi defending the south, and the miniature Bourtzi castle on an island in the harbor. There are also two beaches located on the other side of the peninsula.
Getting Around from the Port
Nafplion's Old Town is exceptionally walkable and located just a few meters from the tender pier. You can easily explore its streets on foot.
For a broader overview and access to the hilltop fortress, consider these options:
- Hop-on/off Bus: These buses depart directly from the tender dock every half hour when a cruise ship is in port. The fare is €8 and includes a short city tour before taking you up to the impressive Palamídi fortress.
- Little Tourist Train: For €4, this train, operated by the same company as the hop-on/off bus, follows a similar route through town but does not go up to Palamídi fortress.
- Taxis: Taxis are available at the port and can be hired for tours of the city or nearby attractions.
- Walking to Palamídi Fortress: For the more adventurous, you can climb the 857 steps to reach the Palamídi fortress from town.
- Free Bicycles: The municipality offers free bicycles for a day. You can pick them up in front of the Town Hall, near the KTEL bus station.
