Getting Around from the Port
Katakolo town center is directly adjacent to the cruise pier and is easily walkable (1-5 minutes).
To reach Ancient Olympia (approx. 35 km / 22 miles from port):
- Taxi: Taxis are readily available at the pier. A round trip to Ancient Olympia, including 2-3 hours of waiting time at the site, typically costs €60-€80. Travel time is approximately 30-40 minutes each way. Negotiate the fare before departing.
- Shuttle Bus: Many cruise lines offer their own shuttle services or organize independent buses directly from the port to Ancient Olympia. These typically cost around €10-€15 per person for a round trip. Check with your cruise line for availability and schedules. Travel time is approximately 30-40 minutes each way.
- Local Train: A small tourist train runs from Katakolo to the larger town of Pyrgos (€1.50, 10-15 minutes). From Pyrgos, you can connect to another local train to Ancient Olympia (additional €1.50, 20-30 minutes). This option is less direct and may not align well with cruise schedules, requiring careful planning to ensure a timely return to the ship.
- Car Rental: Limited car rental options may be available in Katakolo or Pyrgos. While offering flexibility, this is generally not the most practical option for a short port call primarily focused on Ancient Olympia, due to rental procedures and parking considerations.

Dining & Shopping
Katakolo boasts numerous tavernas and cafes situated along the waterfront, offering fresh seafood and traditional Greek dishes. Expect local specialties like moussaka, souvlaki, Greek salads, and fresh grilled fish. Price ranges for a meal are typically moderate, around €15-€25 per person.
Shopping near the terminal and throughout Katakolo town consists mainly of souvenir shops selling replicas of ancient artifacts, olive wood products, local honey, olive oil, and wine. There are no large markets or duty-free shops directly at the terminal.
Weather
Katákolon serves as the cruise port for ancient Olympia, with a warm Mediterranean climate and summer temperatures between 82–91°F (28–33°C) during the cruise season from May to October. Light clothing, sunscreen, a hat, and comfortable walking shoes are absolutely essential for the extensive Olympia archaeological site. The birthplace of the ancient Olympic Games in 776 BC, the original stadium where athletes ran barefoot, and the extraordinary Archaeological Museum housing the Temple of Zeus metopes make Olympia one of the most historically significant cruise excursion sites in the entire Mediterranean.
Safety
Katakolo and the Ancient Olympia area are generally safe for tourists. However, as with any popular tourist destination, be mindful of your belongings in crowded areas to prevent pickpocketing, particularly at the Ancient Olympia archaeological site and museum.
