Your ship will dock directly in the heart of Soudha. An information booth with maps is available at the dock. Souda Bay, one of the Mediterranean's most strategically important NATO anchorages, is renowned for its beautiful landscape. This vast inlet stretches 15km in length and up to 16km in width, making it the largest and most protected natural harbor in the Mediterranean. Historically, it saw significant action during World War II, with many British ships sunk by German aerial bombardment. While Souda itself is a typical port area, it serves as a gateway to the charming city of Chania, located just 6km away.

Getting Around from the Port

The most convenient way to reach Chania, about 6km away, is by local bus. The bus stop is conveniently located approximately 50 meters from the port entrance. When a cruise ship is in port, buses run frequently, departing every 5 minutes. The journey to Chania Central takes about 15 minutes, and the fare is 1.50€. Once in Chania, the bus will drop you near a market from which the Chania harbor area is an easy walk.

Attractions and Activities

With 8-10 hours in port, your primary destination will likely be:

  • Chania Old Town (6km from port): Easily accessible by a 15-minute bus ride (1.50€ fare), Chania's delightful Old Town centers around its historic Venetian harbor. Dating back to the 17th century when the Venice Republic developed it as a major shipbuilding and trade hub, you can stroll through cobbled streets, admire ornate churches, quiet squares, bubbling fountains, and explore boutique shops.
  • Allied World War II Cemetery: Located nearby in Souda, this cemetery offers a poignant historical visit, honoring those who fell during the war.
  • Souda Bay and Islands: While Souda Bay is a popular tourist destination, it's important to note there are no real public beaches available due to the presence of a naval base. However, you can appreciate the bay's beauty and its strategic importance. Small islands near the mouth of the bay, including Souda Island, feature Venetian fortifications. For scenic views of the bay, consider visiting villages like Megala Chorafia and Kalives.

Dining & Shopping

For dining and shopping, Chania is your best bet. The bus will drop you near a market which is an easy walk to the Chania harbor area, offering numerous restaurants, cafes, and shops. Retail stores and specialty shops typically operate from 9:00 AM to 1:30 PM and again from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM on weekdays, and 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM on Saturdays. Tourist shops and convenience stores, especially during summer months, often have extended hours, staying open from dawn until well after midnight.
