Symi Cruise Port Guide
Symi is a charming Greek island where your cruise ship will dock directly in Gialos, the main harbor. Only smaller cruise vessels can access this port, mooring alongside luxury yachts and fishing boats. The town is renowned for its well-preserved neoclassical red-roofed houses that climb the steep, horseshoe-shaped hills, ensuring a picturesque panorama unspoiled by modern development. Life here moves at a relaxed pace, offering a traditional Greek experience and stunning views of the coastline, coves, and inlets.
Getting Around from the Port
As your ship docks right in the town center, Gialos is highly walkable. For exploring beyond the immediate harbor:
- Local Buses: Two bus services operate from the far side of the harbor.
- Gray Bus: Travels to Chorio (the upper town) and then Pedi. Buses depart on the hour, returning from Pedi on the half-hour. A ride to Chorio costs 0.70 EUR, while reaching Pedi is 1 EUR. This "bone-shaking journey" is a local favorite and saves a steep climb, allowing you to walk down the famous Kali Strata steps back to the harbor.
- Blue Minibus: Provides two daily trips to Panormitis, departing at 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM. The 30-minute journey costs 3.50 EUR each way and offers excellent scenic views, with the driver making stops for photos.
- Taxis: A taxi to Panormitis costs approximately 25 EUR.
- Tourist Train: A small tourist train offers a 40-minute scenic trip along the quaysides towards Nimborio, ideal for those with limited mobility.
- Car Rental: Car rental services are available conveniently located right across from the cruise dock.
Attractions and Activities
With 8-10 hours in port, consider these independent options:
- Explore Gialos and Chorio: Stroll along the harbor (Gialos) to admire the neoclassical mansions. For Chorio, the upper town, take the gray bus (0.70 EUR) to avoid the uphill climb and then enjoy a leisurely walk down the "Kali Strata" steps back to the harbor, saving time and energy.
- Visit Panormitis Monastery: Take the blue minibus (3.50 EUR one-way, 30 min, departures 10 AM / 3 PM) or a taxi (approx. 25 EUR) to the historic 15th-century Monastery of Archangel Michail Panormitis, nestled in lush vegetation.
- Discover Nearby Villages:
- Pedi: Reach Pedi via the gray bus (1 EUR) for a change of scenery.
- Nimborio: Take the tourist train for a 40-minute scenic ride along the coast towards Nimborio.
- Panoramic Views: Climb to a viewpoint overlooking the town (can be combined with a trip to Chorio) to see the stunning coves, inlets, and cliffs of Symi's coastline.
Dining
The approximately 1.5-kilometer main street circling the port is lined with a mix of upscale restaurants, charming sidewalk cafes, and some tourist-oriented eateries. Enjoy a peaceful lunch by the sea, sampling flavorful fish caught fresh from the harbor. *
