Scoresby Sund GreenlandCruise Port Guide

The Scoresby Sund fjord system (in Greenlandic: Kangertittivaq) on the eastern coast of Greenland is the world's largest fjord system, a complex of interlocking fjords and side branches covering an area of approximately 38,000 square kilometers — larger than Belgium. The main fjord stretches 350 km inland from the coast, with walls rising 1,000–2,000 meters from the water surface, creating scenery of staggering scale and grandeur.

The fjord system was named after the Scottish whaler William Scoresby Jr., who charted the area in 1822. The only permanent settlement in the entire fjord complex is Ittoqqortoormiit (population ~350), formerly known by the Danish name Scoresbysund, founded in 1925 on a peninsula at the fjord entrance. The community is one of the most isolated towns in the world — the nearest other settlement is hundreds of kilometers away.

Cruising through the Scoresby Sund in summer offers an extraordinary Arctic spectacle: floating icebergs calved from the inland ice sheet, drift ice from the polar pack, and the dark fjord walls reflected in still water. Polar bears roam the fjord shores and ice; the area has one of the highest polar bear densities in the Eastern Arctic. Musk oxen graze on the tundra above the fjord walls, and narwhal (the unicorn whale, with their characteristic spiral tusk) use the fjord as a summer feeding ground.

The rock of the Scoresby Sund walls is among the oldest exposed on the Earth's surface, including Precambrian gneisses over 3 billion years old — older than the Greenlandic ice sheet above them. The landscape is geologically as well as visually overwhelming.

The midnight sun illuminates the fjord from late May to late July, creating an otherworldly light that transforms the ice, water, and rock into a photographic paradise.

Getting Around from the Port

Ships navigate the fjord system directly; there is no port facility. Zodiacs (inflatable boats) are used to land passengers at Ittoqqortoormiit and at wildlife observation points along the fjord walls. Polar bear awareness protocols are in effect for all zodiac and shore landings — expedition guides are mandatory and armed with bear deterrents. No independent transport or walking away from the group is permitted in this environment.

Attractions and Activities

  • Zodiac Cruising Among Icebergs: The primary activity in the fjord; close-up exploration of towering icebergs, ice cliffs, and glacial detail that is inaccessible to the ship.
  • Ittoqqortoormiit Village Visit: One of the world's most isolated communities welcomes occasional visitors; local crafts (tupilak carvings, sealskin items) are sold, and the community's unique lifestyle is visible.
  • Polar Bear and Musk Ox Spotting: The fjord shores and tundra plateaus regularly produce sightings of both species; shore landings are made when conditions are safe.
  • Narwhal Watching (July–August): Narwhal migrate through Scoresby Sund in summer; sightings of their distinctive ivory tusks breaking the surface are possible from Zodiacs.
  • Midnight Sun Photography: At the correct season, the sun never sets; the low-angle light on ice and fjord walls creates extraordinary conditions for photography throughout the 24-hour day.

Dining & Shopping

There are no tourist restaurants or shops in any meaningful sense. Ittoqqortoormiit has a small community shop (kiosk) and informal sales of traditional crafts by residents. All dining and provisions come from the ship. Traditional carvings made from bone, antler, stone, and sealskin make distinctive and authentic purchases directly from local artisans.

Weather

Scoresby Sund (Ittoqqortoormiit) in East Greenland is accessible during the brief Arctic summer (July to August), with cool temperatures between 36–50°F (2–10°C) in one of the world's longest fjord systems. Conditions are harsh and rapidly changing, with fog, cold rain, and strong winds common; heavy insulated waterproof layers, gloves, hat, and sturdy boots are absolutely essential. The extraordinary landscape of towering cliffs, vast icebergs, and abundant polar wildlife makes this one of the most remote and spectacular cruise destinations on Earth.

Safety

The Scoresby Sund environment demands Arctic expedition protocols at all times. Polar bears pose a real danger; never leave the ship or zodiac landing area without trained, armed guides. Water temperature is near freezing; immersion is rapidly fatal — life preservers must be worn in zodiacs at all times. Ice conditions and weather change quickly; ship schedules are dictated by conditions, not plans. Ice falling from glaciers can generate significant waves; zodiac operators maintain safe distances.

Currency and Language

Danish Krone (DKK) is technically the currency of Greenland, though transactions in Ittoqqortoormiit (for crafts) may be conducted in USD, EUR, or DKK. No banking facilities exist; carry cash.
