Terre de Haut GuadeloupeCruise Port Guide
Getting Around from the Port
The tender dock is centrally located, making the town's shops and restaurants easily walkable. Many attractions, including beautiful beaches, are also accessible on foot.
- Walking: A pleasant 15- to 20-minute walk will take you to Plage de Pompierre, curving around a picturesque bay. Another tree-shaded beach can be reached with a 20-minute walk over the island's spine.
- Scooter Rental: Scooters are a popular way to explore further. You can rent one for approximately 15 Euros for the day; a driver's license is required.
- Minibus: Local minibuses are available and can take you to attractions like Fort Napoleon.
Attractions and Activities
- Fort Napoleon: This restored fort is highly recommended for its historical significance, mini-botanical garden, and museum. Most notably, the views from the fort are spectacular. Be aware that the fort closes at 12:30 PM, so plan your visit accordingly and double-check opening hours. Admission is 4 Euros. It's a good hike to reach the fort, so carry plenty of water, or opt for a local minibus ride.
- Plage de Pompierre: Considered one of the finest beaches, Plage de Pompierre features powdery white sand, a half-moon bay, and a backdrop of palm trees. It's about a 15- to 20-minute walk from the main town and is generally uncrowded unless another cruise ship is in port.
- Anse Crawen: Located on the western coast, Anse Crawen is the designated legal nudist beach. While nudity may occur on other beaches, this is the official spot for those wishing to bare all.
- Plage Figuier: For the best snorkeling opportunities, head to Plage Figuier on the southern coast. You'll likely have this pristine spot almost entirely to yourself.
Dining & Shopping
The main street of Bourg des Saintes, right by the tender dock, is bustling with plenty of shops, cafes, and restaurants. The atmosphere often reminds visitors of the South of France. You'll find a variety of dining options and opportunities for souvenir shopping.
- Shopping Hours: Stores typically open from 8:00 AM to noon and again from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM. Businesses are often closed on Saturday afternoons, Sundays, public holidays, and frequently on Wednesday afternoons.
Weather
Terre-de-Haut in the Îles des Saintes has a tropical climate with temperatures between 77°F and 86°F (25°C to 30°C), moderated by trade winds. The cruise season runs November through April during the dry season, when the charming village and harbor see their most pleasant conditions. Pack lightweight clothing, sunscreen, and a compact rain jacket.
Safety
- Fort Napoleon: Be sure to check the closing time for Fort Napoleon, as it shuts down at 12:30 PM. If hiking to the fort, bring plenty of water, especially on warm days.
- Emergency Services: For police assistance, dial 17.
