Labadee HaitiCruise Port Guide
Getting Around from the Port
Labadee is a private Royal Caribbean port, and all logistics are managed by the cruise line. The ship docks directly at Labadee's pier — no tender required. A tram system runs along the peninsula connecting the various beaches and activity areas. The whole resort is walkable but the tram provides a convenient free option, particularly for those carrying beach gear. No transportation to areas outside the resort is available or permitted — Labadee is entirely self-contained. All activities and services within Labadee are pre-bookable through Royal Caribbean's cruise planner system before departure; popular items like the zip line and cabanas sell out, so early booking is strongly advised.
Attractions and Activities
Dragon's Breath Flight Line zip ($89 per person) is the must-do bucket-list item — the world's longest over-water zip line is an extraordinary experience with thrilling speeds and unforgettable views. Dragon's Fire Flight Line (prone zip, $99) is for the truly committed adrenaline seeker. Dragon's Breath Coaster ($35) is a self-controlled mountain coaster that winds through the forested hillside. Dragon's Splash Waterslide offers twisting water slides into the bay. The Arawak Aqua Park ($30) is a floating inflatable obstacle course for families. Kayaking, paddleboarding, and snorkeling equipment rentals are available on the beaches. The Artisan's Village near the main pier is a genuine highlight — a market of Haitian craftspeople selling wood carvings, paintings, metalwork (the distinctive Haitian cut-barrel recycled steel art), and handmade jewelry. This is the primary direct economic benefit to the local Haitian community from Labadee's operation, and the art here is authentic and remarkable. Private cabanas and VIP beach access are bookable at premium rates.
Dining & Shopping
Food at Labadee is included as part of the cruise — a massive buffet barbecue lunch is served at the Barefoot Beach Cafe and Columbus Cove Cafe, featuring jerk chicken, ribs, burgers, corn on the cob, and fresh fruit. Additional specialty food outlets operate on a premium basis. The Artisan's Village market is the primary shopping draw, and it is genuinely worth browsing — Haitian art includes some of the most distinctive and affordable hand-painted canvases in the Caribbean, along with intricate recycled steel work and hand-carved mahogany figures. Rum-based cocktails are served at beach bars throughout the resort (some included, some at extra charge depending on the beverage package).
Weather
Labadee on Haiti's north coast has a warm tropical climate with temperatures between 77°F and 88°F (25°C to 31°C) year-round. Royal Caribbean's private resort destination is most pleasant from October through April, when lower humidity and reliable sunshine create ideal beach conditions. Pack lightweight swimwear, high-SPF sunscreen, and a light layer for afternoon sea breezes.
Safety
Within the Labadee resort, safety standards are maintained to Royal Caribbean's strict corporate specifications — lifeguards are posted at every beach and water feature, activity instructors are trained and certified, medical facilities are available on the ship, and the compound is secure with controlled access. Outside the resort fencing, passengers do not travel — the arrangement is entirely closed. The zip lines have weight restrictions (75–300 lbs) and safety briefings are thorough. Ocean swimming areas are designated and monitored. Royal Caribbean provides substantial support to Haitian communities in the broader area around Labadee; the lease arrangement includes employment provisions and community investment commitments.
Currency and Language
No currency exchange is necessary at Labadee — the entire resort operates on Royal Caribbean's SeaPass system (charges go directly to your cruise account). Some small purchases at the Artisan's Village market may be negotiated in USD cash. Tipping beach staff and market vendors in USD is appreciated and directly benefits the Haitian employees who staff the resort. No local currency (Haitian gourde) is needed or usable within the resort.
