Ambon Cruise Port Guide
Ambon, the capital of Indonesia’s Maluku province, is situated on a mountainous, fertile island that is one of the three main islands of the South Moluccas. The city's port is located within a long, deep harbor, flanked by steep, verdant volcanic slopes. As your cruise ship arrives, you'll notice statues crowning the high hills surrounding the city, which is also known as Kota Ambon.
Getting Around from the Port
The port is directly within Kota Ambon, making the city center and its lush tropical vegetation easily walkable. To explore destinations further afield, taxis are available. It is essential to agree on the fare with the driver before beginning your journey to prevent any misunderstandings.
Attractions and Activities
- Tiahahu Monument: Visit this striking monument on one of Ambon's high hills, which commemorates a young female freedom fighter who bravely resisted Dutch colonialism. It offers both historical insight and excellent views.
- Siwalima Museum: Explore a significant collection of ethnographic arts and crafts unique to the Maluku region at this museum, providing a deeper understanding of local culture.
- Leitimur Mountain Villages: Consider a journey to the scenic mountain villages of Leitimur, such as Soya Atas, to experience local life and enjoy the natural surroundings.
- Sacred Eels of Waai: Travel to Waai to observe the "Sacred Eels." These creatures are considered good luck, and you can even swim in the clear pool where they reside.
Dining & Shopping
When dining in Indonesia, be aware that eating with your hand is a very common practice. The etiquette involves using your right hand only (the left hand is traditionally reserved for personal hygiene). To eat, use four fingers to form a small ball of rice, which can then be dipped into sauces before using your thumb to push it into your mouth. Do not use your bare hands to take food directly from communal serving dishes; instead, use utensils with your left hand to serve yourself. It is always wise to wash your hands thoroughly before and after eating. Note that in more "classy" establishments where cutlery is provided and other diners are using it, eating by hand might be frowned upon. Local souvenirs can be found in Kota Ambon.
Safety
A significant concern in Indonesia is credit card cloning and fraud, which is identified as a major problem. Exercise caution when using credit cards. The emergency number for mobile phones is 112.
Currency and Language
The local currency is the Indonesian Rupiah (Rp). ATMs are commonly found in Ambon. While Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted, American Express can be problematic. Be prepared for potential surcharges of 2-5% over cash prices when using credit cards at smaller operations. The sole official language is Indonesian, known as Bahasa Indonesia. For internet access, prices typically hover around Rp 5,000 per hour. Free Wi-Fi hotspots are often available in some shopping malls, McDonald's restaurants, Starbucks cafes, and in the lobbies of many hotels.
