Giardini Naxos ItalyCruise Port Guide
Getting Around from the Port
Getting from Giardini Naxos to Taormina is straightforward but requires transport:
- Walking: Taormina is tantalizingly close but situated on a hill. While technically walkable, it involves many stairs and is not recommended for those unsuited to significant climbing.
- Bus: Buses depart from the Recanati bus station in Giardini Naxos, offering a convenient and economical way to reach Taormina. A one-way ticket costs €1, and a return ticket is €2.50.
- Taxi: Taxis are available at the dock. Expect to pay around €30 each way for up to six people. Always negotiate and agree on the fare before starting your journey. Taxis tend to be quicker and offer more direct access.
- Ship Shuttles: Your cruise line may offer shuttle services to Taormina, either free of charge or for a fee. Check with your ship for details. From Taormina, you can also take another bus further up the hill to visit Castelmola. The beautiful Isola Bella, a small island often connected by a strip of beach depending on the tide, is located down the hill from Taormina.
Attractions and Activities
With 8-10 hours in port, here are some key activities:
- Explore Taormina (3-5 hours): Take a bus or taxi to this iconic hillside town. Wander along Corso Umberto, the main shopping street, enjoy stunning views of the bay and Mount Etna, and visit the impressive Greek Amphitheater (Teatro Greco). Don't miss the Torre dell'Orogio clock tower.
- Visit Isola Bella (1-2 hours): Located below Taormina, this beautiful small island is often accessible by a strip of beach. You can spend time relaxing or swimming here.
- Discover Castelmola (2-3 hours including travel): From Taormina, take a local bus further up the hill to the charming village of Castelmola. It offers even more elevated views and a traditional Sicilian atmosphere.
- Mount Etna Tour (Half-day or full-day): Many local agencies offer day trips to Mount Etna. While you cannot typically walk to the very top without a guide (and depending on volcanic activity), the lava flows are impressive. Be sure to wear warm clothes, even in summer, as it can be cold and cloudy at over 3000m high. This is a more time-consuming excursion, so plan carefully.
- Enjoy Giardini Naxos (1-3 hours): If you prefer to stay close to the port, Giardini Naxos offers lovely beaches right by the tender dock, along with opportunities for water sports like scuba diving and snorkeling.
Dining
In Giardini Naxos, you'll find numerous restaurants, bars, gelaterias, and cafes lining the beach right near the dock. In Taormina, there are many dining options throughout the town, especially along Corso Umberto. Local specialties include fresh seafood and, of course, delicious Italian staples. Try Limoncello, a sweet lemon alcoholic drink, often served chilled after a meal.
Shopping
Taormina's Corso Umberto is the main shopping street, offering a wide array of souvenir shops. Popular purchases include local handicraft items such as embroidery, ceramics, wrought-iron, and jewelry (especially coral and obsidian, a black volcanic glass). Most tourist-oriented stores accept major credit cards. Shopping Hours: Shops generally open from 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM – 8:00 PM, Monday through Saturday. Many shops are closed on Monday mornings and Saturday afternoons. In highly touristed areas like Taormina, Sunday opening is becoming more common.
Weather
Giardini Naxos on Sicily's east coast near Taormina has a hot Mediterranean climate with summer temperatures between 82–91°F (28–35°C) during the cruise season from April to October. Light clothing, sunscreen, and sunglasses are essential; spring and fall are ideal at 64–77°F (18–25°C). The extraordinary Taormina Greek Theatre with its backdrop of Mount Etna rising from the Ionian Sea is one of the most spectacular ancient performance venues in the entire world.
