Marina di Carrara ItalyCruise Port Guide
Getting Around from the Port
From the port, complimentary shuttle buses are available to take you to the inland town of Carrara. These shuttles run every 30 minutes, with a reduced schedule during Siesta. For independent travel to other cities, the Carrara Avenza train station is conveniently located and quite close to the port area. From here, you can take a direct train to Pisa, which typically takes about 1 hour. To reach Florence, the journey is longer, well over 2 hours, and requires a transfer at either Pisa or Viareggio. When planning your excursions, it can be beneficial to compare the independent travel options with the tours offered by your cruise line.
Attractions and Activities
1. Explore Marina di Carrara: A short walk to the left from the port exit brings you to Marina di Carrara, a modern seaside resort. Enjoy its large, soft sandy beach, which offers "Bagni" facilities for renting chairs and umbrellas, complete with showers, changing rooms, and lifeguards. You can also simply stroll along the waterfront and relax at one of the many terraces. 2. Visit Carrara (The Marble City): Take the complimentary port shuttle (approx. 30-minute intervals) 20 minutes inland to Carrara. Here, you'll discover why it's nicknamed the "Marble City," with marble visible everywhere, from pavements and sculptures to fountains and the main cathedral. The dramatic white mountains behind the town are the source of this famous marble. 3. Day Trip to Pisa: Located approximately 50 minutes away by car or about 1 hour by direct train from Carrara Avenza station, Pisa is an iconic destination. Visit the famous Leaning Tower and the Field of Miracles. 4. Day Trip to Florence: For a longer excursion, Florence is about 1 hour and 45 minutes away by car. By train from Carrara Avenza, the journey takes well over 2 hours and requires a change in Pisa or Viareggio. Florence offers world-class art and stunning Renaissance architecture.
Dining & Shopping
In Marina di Carrara, you'll find numerous terraces along the waterfront perfect for enjoying a drink or a meal. General Italian shop opening hours are typically from Monday to Saturday, between 8:00 AM and 1:00 PM, and then reopening from about 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM. Be aware that many shops close on Saturday afternoons and Monday mornings. In northern areas like this, some businesses may operate on a 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM schedule. Traditionally, most businesses, excluding bars and restaurants, are closed on Sundays, though a "pasticceria" (pastry shop) might be open in the mornings in most towns.
