Many key attractions, including cafes and shops, are within easy walking distance. The terminus for the Villa Opicina Tram in Piazza Oberdan is approximately a 20-minute walk from the terminal.
Local Public Transport (Trieste Airport): If you are joining or departing your cruise directly from Trieste Airport (located 20 miles away), the most convenient option is the number 51 bus. This bus runs roughly half-hourly on weekdays, connecting the airport to Trieste's bus and railway station. The journey takes about 50 minutes and costs €3 for a single ticket. Tickets can be purchased at city bus/coach stations or at the airport's Arrivals Hall (either from an automatic machine or the Post Office). As you travel along the coast, look out for Castello Miramare on your right.
Taxis: Taxis are available from Trieste Airport's Arrivals hall between 08:00 and 24:00.
Cruise Line Shuttles: Be aware that some cruise lines, such as Costa and MSC, offer shuttle services from Venice Marco Polo airport, which is approximately a two-hour drive from Trieste. The final part of this journey offers stunning views of the Adriatic from elevated positions.

This original form of transport, a hybrid between a regular tram and a cable railway, takes you on a 20-minute ride up to the scenic Carso plateau, 348 meters above sea level. Nicely restored tram cars run every 20 minutes from early morning to early evening, and a return ticket costs approximately €3.

While a full exploration might exceed your port time, consider a shorter venture to nearby traditional villages or areas like Muggia to experience the region's untouched beauty.
Dining
Trieste is celebrated for its coffee culture; indulging in a cup at a local cafe is a must. Many sidewalk cafes and restaurants can be found, particularly if you walk right from the ship towards the Aquario (Aquarium) and cross the street. Note that some restaurants might be closed during the daytime but still offer outdoor seating, which can be a quiet spot for a break.
Shopping
Trieste boasts an elegant city center with a wide selection of upscale stores.
Markets:
- Covered Market: Located at the corner of Via Carducci and Via della Majolica. Operating hours are Monday from 8am to 2pm, and Tuesday through Saturday from 8am to 7pm.
- Open-Air Market: Situated on Ponte Ponterosso, alongside the canal that extends into the city center. This market is open Tuesday through Saturday from 8am to 5:30pm.
