Cruise ships typically dock at a pier within easy walking distance of the Old Town, eliminating the need for tendering. While not as visually grand as some other Baltic capitals, Klaipeda provides a picturesque Old Town with German-inspired architecture and convenient access to the unique natural beauty of the Curonian Spit. The port area is functional, and the city center is easily navigable on foot.
Getting Around from the Port
The heart of Klaipeda's Old Town is approximately 1-1.5 km (0.6-0.9 miles) from the cruise terminal, a pleasant walk of 15-20 minutes.
To reach the Curonian Spit (Smiltynė side, for Nida/Juodkrante):
- Old Ferry Terminal (Naujoji Perkėla): For vehicles and passengers. Located about 2 km from the cruise terminal.
- New Ferry Terminal (Senoji Perkėla): For passengers and cyclists only. Located about 0.5 km (5-10 minute walk) from the cruise terminal, on the Danė River near the Old Town. This is the more convenient option for pedestrians.
- Ferry Cost: Passenger ticket is around €1-€2 return.
- Ferry Duration: 5-10 minutes across the lagoon.
Once in Smiltynė (on the Curonian Spit):
- Bus: Local buses (Route 33) connect Smiltynė to Juodkrantė (approx. 30 min, €2-€3 one-way) and Nida (approx. 1 hour, €4-€5 one-way). Buses operate regularly.
- Taxi: Taxis are available but can be expensive for longer distances on the Spit. Negotiate fare or ensure meter use. Expect €20-€30 to Juodkrantė, €40-€60 to Nida one way.
- Bicycle Rental: Available on the Smiltynė side or in Klaipeda. Excellent way to explore the Curonian Spit's bike paths. Rental costs around €10-€15 for a full day.
Car rental is available in Klaipeda, but navigating the ferry and parking on the Spit, especially in peak season, can be time-consuming. For independent exploration of the Spit, public bus or bicycle after the ferry crossing is often more practical.

In Juodkrantė, walk to the "Hill of Witches" (Raganų Kalnas), an outdoor sculpture park featuring hundreds of wooden carvings based on Lithuanian folklore. Curonian Spit - Nida & Dead Dunes: For a longer excursion, continue from Juodkrantė to Nida by Bus 33 (additional 30 min, €2-€3 one-way). Nida is the largest settlement on the Lithuanian side of the Spit, known for its vibrant red-roofed houses, the Thomas Mann Memorial Museum (entrance ~€5), and the stunning Parnidis Dune with panoramic views of the "Dead Dunes" (Mirusios kopos) – a unique landscape of moving sand dunes. A boardwalk leads up the dune. Allow 5-6 hours total for this more extensive trip.

This complex includes an aquarium, a natural history museum focusing on marine life, and a dolphinarium with daily shows (check schedule). Shopping
The Old Town has small boutiques and souvenir shops. Look for amber jewelry and crafts, linen products, and locally produced ceramics. There are no dedicated duty-free shops at the terminal, but prices for local goods are generally reasonable. A small market may be found near the Old Town.
Currency and Language
Lithuania uses the Euro (€). Credit cards (Visa, Mastercard) are widely accepted in most shops, restaurants, and hotels. ATMs are readily available throughout Klaipeda. The official language is Lithuanian. English is commonly spoken in tourist areas, hotels, and restaurants.
