Rotterdam Cruise Port Guide
Your cruise ship will dock directly at the Holland Amerika quay, conveniently located in the city center of Rotterdam. This modern port city, largely rebuilt after the devastation of World War II, showcases spectacular contemporary architecture. From the terminal, it's an easy walk over the iconic Erasmus Bridge to reach the heart of Rotterdam.
While half a day is often sufficient to explore the city's main attractions, there's plenty to see. Highlights include the 605-ft/184-m tall Euromast Space Tower with its revolving elevator offering panoramic views, the striking Erasmus Bridge nicknamed "the swan," one of the world's busiest harbors, and the nearby Maritime Museum. Art enthusiasts can visit the Boijmans-van-Beuningen Museum for Dutch, Italian, and French collections. The city center is very walkable, making it easy to explore on foot.
Getting Around from the Port
The city center of Rotterdam is very walkable from the cruise terminal, easily accessible via a pleasant stroll across the Erasmus Bridge.
Taxis: A taxi to the railway station takes about 5 minutes and costs approximately €10, plus an extra charge for suitcases. The ride is around 2-3 km. A crucial tip: ensure your taxi driver crosses the Erasmus Bridge; if they take a longer route, they may be attempting to overcharge you.
Public Transportation (Tram, Bus, Metro, Train): Trams 23 or 25 are available about 500 meters from the port; alight at the Wilhelminaplein stop. For all public transport in the Netherlands, including trains, buses, and metros, you can use your foreign credit card (Maestro or Visa) to check in and out. Remember to always check in when you start your journey and check out when you finish to avoid being overcharged.
Hop on/off Tram Line 10: This historic tram offers a convenient sightseeing tour of Rotterdam's best tourist spots, including the new Central Station, the Market Hall, the Cube Houses, and routes along the Erasmus Bridge and historic Delfshaven. A day ticket can be purchased on board, allowing you to hop on or off at any stop.
Cruise Line Shuttles: Your cruise line may offer limited shuttle services to the Markthal, an architectural landmark. Check with your cruise line for availability and details.
To Amsterdam: Amsterdam is just an hour away by train. Remember to use your foreign credit card to check in and out at the train stations.

Safety
No specific safety concerns beyond general travel precautions are noted for Rotterdam.
Currency and Language
The local currency is the Euro (€), divided into 100 cents. Coins come in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, and 50 cents, and 1 and 2 euros. Banknotes are available in 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, and 500 euro denominations. Be aware that some shops may not accept large denomination notes, and many prefer to round cash payments to the nearest 5 cents, often not accepting 1 and 2 cent coins.
Credit Cards: It is important to note that credit cards are not as widely accepted in the Netherlands as they are in many other countries. Always inquire first if you plan to pay by credit card.
Language: English is widely spoken in Rotterdam, and most locals are proud of their proficiency. Many also speak German and French. If you are an English speaker, it's best to stick to English (unless you are fluent in Dutch), as attempting French or German might be seen as less helpful than simply using English. While Dutch and German share some similarities, they are not mutually intelligible; Dutch people typically learn German in school and often speak better English than German. Free Wi-Fi is available at the cruise terminal, most restaurants, and on trains and at train stations.
