Oban New ZealandCruise Port Guide
Getting Around from the Port
Upon tendering at Golden Bay, the town center of Oban is a walk of about one-third of a mile. The first section of this walk is a steep hill. Once in town, Oban's small commercial area, including its few shops and restaurants, is easily walkable within about five minutes from the wharf. For exploring further afield, a tour office located by the wharf offers bicycle and scooter rentals.
Attractions and Activities
Stewart Island is renowned for its natural beauty and outdoor activities. The primary attraction in Oban is hiking, with numerous trails showcasing the island's unspoiled landscapes, picturesque bays, and coves. The island's largely uninhabited status (only about 4% is settled) means there are extensive opportunities to experience primeval New Zealand wilderness.
Dining & Shopping
Oban is a very small town with a limited selection of restaurants and stores. You'll find a few options for dining and shopping within a short walk of the wharf. There is also a Post Office conveniently located at the bottom of Ayr Street for any postal needs.
Weather
Oban on Stewart Island has a temperate but highly unpredictable maritime climate, famous for delivering 'four seasons in one day.' The main cruise season aligns with New Zealand's summer from December to February, when temperatures are mild, typically ranging from 54°F to 64°F (12°C to 18°C). Rain is frequent throughout the year, so packing a good waterproof and windproof jacket is essential, and visitors should dress in layers to easily adapt to changing conditions.
Currency and Language
The local currency is the New Zealand Dollar (NZD). While major credit cards are generally accepted in tourist-oriented establishments, it's wise to carry some local cash. Some traders, particularly in tourist destinations, may accept foreign currency. An approximate exchange rate to be aware of is US$1 = NZD1.30.
