Picton Cruise Port Guide
Picton is a small, relaxed seaport nestled at the head of Queen Charlotte Sound, known for its picturesque setting, beaches, easy walking trails, and pleasant climate. The main highlight for cruise visitors is the stunning scenic sail-in and sail-out through the Marlborough Sounds, so be sure to find a good viewing spot on deck.
Your ship will dock at Waitohi Wharf, which is approximately half a mile (0.8 km) from Picton's town center. Please note that walking on the pier is not permitted, but a complimentary shuttle bus is provided to transport you directly to the town center. Taxis are generally available at the pier. If your ship is longer than 245 meters (800 feet), it might dock at Shakespeare Bay, which is a slightly further 3-minute drive from the center of Picton. A kiosk for the Picton Information Office is conveniently located on the wharf.
Getting Around from the Port
From Waitohi Wharf, a complimentary shuttle bus is mandatory as walking on the pier is not allowed. The shuttle will take you the short half-mile (0.8 km) distance to Picton's town center. Taxis are usually available right at the pier for direct transport. If your ship docks at Shakespeare Bay, a 3-minute drive will get you to the town center.
For exploring beyond Picton:
- Marlborough Wine Region: Approximately a 25-minute drive from Picton.
- Blenheim Town: Around a 40-minute drive.
- Havelock: Approximately a 45-minute drive.

- Explore the Marlborough Sounds: The primary draw of Picton. Many vendors at the shuttle drop-off point in town offer boat trips for dolphin watching, fishing, or scenic cruises into the Queen Charlotte Sound. The 73.5 km Queen Charlotte Track also offers stunning coastal views and native bush; you can arrange for cruise and pack transfers to walk or bike sections of it for a day trip.
- Marlborough Wine Region Tour: Just a 25-minute drive from Picton, this region is world-renowned for its Sauvignon Blanc. With over 35 cellars, you can visit several wineries to compare tastings from boutique family producers to well-known names.
- Visit Blenheim Town: Approximately a 40-minute drive from Picton, Blenheim offers more urban attractions. Don't miss Seymour Square with its 1928 War Memorial and Clock Tower. You can also visit the Marlborough Museum or the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre.
