Tromso Cruise Port Guide
Tromso, an island city located above the Arctic Circle at 69ºN, offers a unique frontier atmosphere and served as a historical base for Arctic expeditions. It sits midway between the Lofoten Islands and the North Cape. While smaller ships (like Hurtigruten) often dock at the Prostneset pier directly in the city center, larger cruise ships typically use the Breivika dock, located 4 km north of town. The Port of Tromso has recently invested in new piers and terminal facilities in the city center, which will allow more cruise ships to dock in the heart of the city, placing passengers directly amidst local activities.
Getting Around from the Port
From Breivika Dock (most large cruise ships): This dock is 4 km north of the city center and lacks facilities.
- Cruise Shuttle: Many cruise lines operate shuttles to the city center, typically costing around 19.95 Euro per person.
- Public Bus: Bus 42 runs regularly (approximately every 30 minutes) between Breivika and the city center. An all-day bus pass for Tromso costs NOK 60.
- To the Cable Car (Fjellheisen) from Breivika:
- Walk to the main road, use the walkway under the road to reach the bus stop.
- Take Bus 42 towards the city center (about a 10-minute ride). Get off at Stortorget (the first stop after two sets of traffic lights).
- Walk across the road towards the ocean, turn right, and after 20 meters, you will find the stop for Bus 26.
- Take Bus 26 to "Fjellheisen" (runs every 30 minutes).
- To return, take Bus 26 back to the city center (it runs in a loop), then walk about 200 meters south from Stortorget to catch Bus 42 northbound from Urmaker Jørgensen back to Breivika.
- Taxi: A taxi from Breivika to the city center or directly to the cable car will be faster but more expensive. A one-way trip to the cable car costs around NOK 150 for up to four people.
From Prostneset Dock (city center): If your ship docks here, you are already in the heart of Tromso, and most city attractions are within walking distance.
Attractions and Activities
With 8-10 hours in port, Tromso offers several engaging activities:
- The Cable Car (Fjellheisen) to Mt. Storsteinen: A must-do experience, the cable car ascends 420 meters above sea level in just four minutes, offering breathtaking panoramic views of Tromso and the surrounding Arctic landscape. There's a restaurant and outdoor café at the top (seating for 150). A roundtrip ticket costs NOK 120. Allow 2-3 hours including travel.
- Polaria: This unique museum, shaped like an iceberg, is dedicated to the Arctic. It features the world's northernmost aquarium with Arctic marine life, and an immersive experience where you can feel a snowstorm.
- The Arctic Cathedral: An iconic architectural landmark of Tromso, known for its distinctive design.
- The Botanic Garden: If docking at Breivika, these famous gardens are conveniently located just across the main road from the pier. Follow the painted "steps" to find them.
- The Polar Museum: Learn about Tromso's role in Arctic hunting, trapping, and expeditions.
- Tromsø Museum: Explore the natural and cultural history of Northern Norway.
- Lyngen: Located within the Troms region, Lyngen is a peninsula characterized by towering mountains (up to 1833 meters) rising directly from the Arctic Ocean. With a population of about 3200, this is a more distant option for those looking to explore beyond the city, but may require organized transport due to the limited port time.
