Victoria Cruise Port Guide
Victoria, the capital of Seychelles, is located on Mahe, the largest island in the archipelago. Ships dock directly at Port Victoria, offering a picturesque backdrop of steep, magnificent mountains. The town blends modern and indigenous architecture, serving as the country's hub for business and commerce.
Upon disembarking, you'll find a permanent kiosk near the pier selling maps and souvenirs. A free local map is also often offered. Be aware that SIM cards sold at the port tend to be pricey, and a general warning applies: expect everything in Seychelles to be quite expensive. While walking is an option, taxis are generally available at the pier. If the dock is particularly busy, finding a short-distance taxi ride might be difficult; it's advisable to wait until the rush subsides.
Getting Around from the Port
From the pier, you can walk approximately 300 meters, passing port authority offices and a covered walkway, to reach a car park. Here, you'll likely find temporary curio shops and taxis. Turn right from the car park to head towards downtown Victoria. The iconic Clock Tower is about 1.5 km from the pier, roughly a 20-minute walk.
Taxis are a popular choice for both short trips and longer island tours. There are no meters, but quoted prices are generally considered fair. For example, a 3-hour tour of the northern part of the island might cost around 70 Euros or 90 US dollars. Remember that during peak times at the dock, securing a taxi for very short distances can be challenging.
The Botanical Gardens, a notable attraction, are located in the opposite direction from downtown and are about a 20-minute walk from the ship.
Attractions and Activities
With only 8-10 hours, focus on Victoria and nearby Mahe attractions:
- Victoria Town Center Exploration: A 20-minute walk (1.5 km) from the pier brings you to the Clock Tower, the heart of Victoria. Here you can explore sites like the museum, cathedral, government house, and the vibrant open-air market held every morning.
- Botanical Gardens: Approximately a 20-minute walk from the ship (in the opposite direction from downtown). This garden offers a chance to walk amongst Giant Tortoises. Entrance costs a little over 18 Euros per person.
- Island Sightseeing Tour: Consider hiring a taxi for a 3-hour tour of the northern section of Mahe for about 70 Euros / 90 US dollars. This allows you to venture beyond Victoria and enjoy the island's green-clad mountains and palm-fringed beaches. For stunning views of the west coast, ask your driver to stop at the Seychelles Tea and Coffee Company, situated high on the slopes of Morne Blanc Mountain.
- Beach Hopping: Mahe boasts 68 pristine white sand beaches. While time might be limited for extensive beach hopping, a taxi tour could include a stop at one of the island's renowned beaches.
It's worth comparing prices and itineraries offered by your cruise line with independent tours available through platforms like GetYourGuide and Viator.
Dining & Shopping
Victoria town center offers a variety of small shops. Good local buys include straw items, paintings by local artists, various spices, island tea, red and black coral jewelry, T-shirts, wood carvings, and the famous (and very heavy) coco de mer double coconut. An open-air market operates every morning in the main section of Victoria, perfect for experiencing local life and finding souvenirs. Shopping hours are generally Mon-Fri 0800-1700 and Sat 0800-1200, with some shops closing for lunch between 1200-1300 on weekdays.
For dining and drinks, the Seychelles Yacht Club welcomes visitors and offers free WiFi. However, if it's busy, it's wise to check if you can get a connection before making a purchase; inquire at the counter for the password. You'll find almost no reliable open WiFi connections elsewhere downtown; those that appear open often don't provide internet access.
Safety
While Victoria is generally safe, be mindful that all goods and services, including souvenirs and transportation, are quite expensive. When the dock is busy, taxis for short distances can be difficult to obtain; patience is key, and waiting for the initial rush to clear is recommended.
Currency and Language
The local currency is the Seychelles Rupee (SCR). The exchange rate is approximately 1 Euro to 8 rupees. ATMs typically offer the best conversion rates, though banks and the airport also provide currency exchange services. While credit cards are accepted in many larger establishments, it's always good to have some local currency for smaller purchases or market stalls.
Languages spoken in Seychelles are Creole (the official language), English, and French.
