Weather
Durban enjoys a humid subtropical climate with warm temperatures year-round, with the main cruise season from November to April (Southern Hemisphere summer) bringing warm, humid conditions between 75–90°F (24–32°C). Brief afternoon thundershowers are common in summer; a light rain jacket or umbrella is useful. Light, breathable clothing, sunscreen, and sunglasses are recommended — the Golden Mile beach promenade, the Indian-influenced Victoria Street Market, and the Valley of a Thousand Hills safari access make Durban an exciting African port.
Safety
Walking from Port: Despite the city center being a short 10-minute walk, walking directly from the cruise terminal is not recommended. ATMs: When using ATMs, always choose machines located inside a mall or other secure building. Be vigilant to protect your PIN and watch out for potential scams, such as machines that appear to "eat" your card.
Currency and Language
Local Currency: The currency is the South African Rand (ZAR). Credit Cards: Most retail stores throughout Durban accept major credit cards. ATMs: Automated Teller Machines are available, but for safety, it is strongly advised to use only those located inside a mall or other secure building. Language: South Africa has 11 official languages. While not always a first language, English is widely spoken by most residents, particularly outside of rural black African communities. Afrikaans is also commonly spoken.
