Seogwipo City South KoreaCruise Port Guide
Getting Around from the Port
Cruise ships dock at Gangjeong Cruise Terminal, approximately 12 km west of Seogwipo city centre. Shuttle buses or taxis from the terminal reach central Seogwipo in approximately 20 minutes (taxi approximately KRW 15,000–20,000). Seogwipo's main attractions — Cheonjeyeon Waterfall, Jusangjeolli, Olle Trail, and city centre — are within comfortable taxi reach. Seongsan Ilchulbong on the island's east coast is approximately 45 km from the terminal by taxi or tour bus (approximately 60 minutes; taxi approximately KRW 55,000–65,000 each way). Shore excursion coaches from the cruise terminal reach most island sites. Jeju City on the north coast (for Jeju Folk Village, cave attractions, and additional shopping) is approximately 35 km from Gangjeong by taxi or rental car.
Attractions and Activities
Cheonjeyeon Waterfall admission is approximately KRW 2,500 for adults. Jusangjeolli cliff area is approximately KRW 2,000. Seongsan Ilchulbong (Sunrise Peak) admission is approximately KRW 2,000; the climb takes approximately 20 minutes. Hallasan National Park hiking is free (registration required for summit route). Tangerine (hallabong) fruit-picking farm experiences can be booked through local operators for approximately KRW 10,000–15,000 per person and include unlimited picking and eating. Haenyeo diving demonstrations are viewable for free at Hwasun Haenyeo Village or Seongsan Haenyeo Market. Shore excursion packages covering Seongsan, Cheonjeyeon, and Jusangjeolli in a single day typically run approximately $40–$70 per person. The Seogwipo Maeil Olle Market in the city centre is free to browse.
Dining & Shopping
Seogwipo's food culture is centred on extraordinarily fresh seafood and Jeju's unique agricultural products. The haenyeo (female divers) sell live abalone, sea urchin, and conch directly from their boats and stalls near the waterfront — raw abalone eaten on the spot with chogochujang (red pepper sauce) is an unmissable Jeju experience. Jeju black pork barbecue (samgyeopsal from the black-bristled Jeju pig, with a richer flavour than mainland pork) is the island's most celebrated dining experience — the streets around Seogwipo's Maeil Olle Market are lined with dedicated black pork restaurants. Hallabong mandarin oranges, sold in every form from fresh fruit to chocolates to tea, are the essential edible souvenir. The Seogwipo Maeil Olle Market is an excellent indoor market for fresh seafood, produce, and Korean street food including tteok-bokki and pajeon (seafood pancake). For shopping, tangerine-based skincare products and volcanic cosmetics are popular Jeju souvenirs at the duty-free shops near the terminal.
Weather
Seogwipo on Jeju Island's south coast enjoys a humid subtropical climate, the warmest in South Korea, though winters can be breezy and cool. Summers from June to August are hot and humid with temperatures often reaching 86°F (30°C) and a monsoon in late June–July, followed by typhoon risk in late summer and early autumn. Spring and autumn offer the most pleasant walking weather, so pack light layers and a compact umbrella.
Safety
Jeju Island and Seogwipo are very safe destinations with low crime rates. The tourist areas — waterfalls, cliff walks, and market districts — are well-lit and heavily visited. Exercise normal precautions around cliff edges (Jusangjeolli and Seongsan have some unfenced sections above the sea) and on the Hallasan hiking trails where weather can change rapidly with altitude. The sea around Jeju has strong tidal currents and cold water temperatures despite the subtropical appearance — do not swim in unsupervised areas. Traffic drives on the right in South Korea; take care crossing roads.
Currency and Language
South Korea uses the Korean Won (KRW). As of 2026, approximately KRW 1,350–1,380 equals 1 USD. Card payment is widely accepted in Seogwipo's restaurants and shops, though small market stalls may prefer cash. ATMs accepting foreign cards are available in convenience stores (CU, GS25) throughout the city. The cruise terminal has currency exchange facilities. Jeju is generally considered good value — a full black pork barbecue dinner costs approximately KRW 15,000–25,000 per person; a bowl of haemul pajeon (seafood pancake) approximately KRW 12,000–15,000.
