Vilagarcia SpainCruise Port Guide
Getting Around from the Port
The port is conveniently located near the town center, making most of Vilagarcia's attractions walkable. Some cruise lines may offer shuttle services into the town, though it's often not necessary due to the proximity.
For independent travel to Santiago de Compostela, a train journey is the most efficient option, taking approximately 40 minutes. The train station is located within Vilagarcia. Taxis are available at the port for local travel or to the train station.
Attractions and Activities
- Santiago de Compostela: The most popular day trip, this historic city is located 45km north and can be reached by train in about 40 minutes. It's renowned for its cathedral, the final destination of the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage.
- Explore Vilagarcia Town: Wander through the lively streets, enjoy the local atmosphere, and discover the town's facilities. The yachting harbor, one of Galicia's largest, is a pleasant area for a stroll.
- Beaches (Concha and Compostela): Located north of the yachting harbor, these beaches offer a relaxing spot to enjoy the Galician coast.
- Seaside Walk to Carril: Enjoy a pleasant two-kilometer walk along the coast from the yachting harbor to the charming fishing town of Carril. Halfway along this route, you'll find a Visitors Center, built over the strand, which can provide useful tourist information about the town and surrounding district.
Dining & Shopping
Vilagarcia offers various dining and shopping opportunities. The local street market is a highlight, taking place every Tuesday and Saturday. If a market day falls on a bank holiday, it is moved forward by one day. You can find the stalls spread across the town center, specifically between Alexandre Bóveda and Praza Martín Gómez Abal, extending through Avenida da Mariña, Praza Doutor Carús, and several side streets in O Castro.
Standard shop hours are generally Monday through Saturday, from 9:30 AM to 1:30 PM and 4:30 PM to 8:00 PM. Larger shopping centers tend to open continuously from 10:00 AM to 9:00 PM or 10:00 PM, sometimes even on Sundays. During high season, shops in coastal areas may remain open past 10:00 PM.
Weather
Vilagarcía de Arousa in the Galician Rías Baixas has a temperate oceanic climate with mild summer temperatures between 60–77°F (15–25°C) during the cruise season. The lush green Galician coast receives more rain than southern Spain, so a waterproof jacket is always useful. The extraordinary shellfish and Albariño wine culture of the Rías Baixas, combined with the scenic estuary setting, make this an outstanding Galician port.
Safety
For emergencies, dial 112 free of charge from any phone in Spain. This service is available in Spanish and often in English, French, or German in tourist areas. Pharmacies typically operate from 9:30 AM to 1:30 PM and 4:30 PM to 8:00 PM. In larger cities, 24-hour pharmacies are available; their rotating schedules are usually posted in newspapers and on pharmacy doors.
Currency and Language
The local currency is the Euro (EUR). Credit cards are widely accepted throughout Vilagarcia. ATMs are readily available. While Spanish is the official language, Galician is also spoken in this region. In areas frequented by tourists, you may find some English, French, and German speakers.
