Trincomalee Sri LankaCruise Port Guide
Getting Around from the Port
Trincomalee is a very compact town, making walking a suitable way to explore the immediate area. For destinations further afield, rickshaws are readily available on nearly every corner. While exploring, it's worth comparing independent options with any cruise line tours offered for the area.
Attractions and Activities
- Koneswaram Temple and Fort Frederick: Visit the historic Fort Frederick, built by the Portuguese in 1624 on the foundations of the original Koneswaram shrine. Just beyond the fort lies the renovated Hindu Koneswaram temple, perched high on the promontory of Swami Rock, offering stunning views over the sea.
- Trincomalee Beaches: Enjoy the picturesque white-sand beaches for sunbathing, swimming, or snorkeling directly from the shore.
- Pigeon Island National Park: Embark on a snorkeling trip to Pigeon Island. Local boats can take you there for approximately US$30 for a return journey. The island offers abundant sea life, but be aware that some snorkeling areas are extremely deep, reaching up to a thousand meters, requiring caution. Unfortunately, local respect for coral is noted as lacking.
- Seven Hot Springs: Explore the unique natural hot springs located just outside the main town.
- Buddhist Historical Sites: Discover various Buddhist historical sites in the vicinity of Trincomalee.
Dining & Shopping
While specific restaurants near the tender drop-off are not mentioned, you can find local handicrafts such as pottery, lacework, and batik in the town. Shopping hours generally run from Monday to Friday, 09:00 to 17:30, and on Saturdays from 09:00 to 13:00.
Weather
Trincomalee on Sri Lanka's northeast coast enjoys a tropical climate with warm temperatures year-round ranging from 79°F to 90°F (26–32°C). Unlike Colombo, the east coast has its primary dry season from April to September, making this the preferred cruise period for Trincomalee with calm seas and sunny weather ideal for its famous beaches. Pack lightweight clothing, strong sunscreen, a hat, and a light rain jacket for occasional passing showers.
Safety
When snorkeling, especially around Pigeon Island, exercise great caution due to areas that can be extremely deep (up to 1000 meters). Be aware that coral health in some areas is impacted by a lack of local respect.
Currency and Language
The local currency is the Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR). Approximate exchange rates are around 110 LKR per US Dollar or 170 LKR per Euro. ATMs are available in cities and suburbs, particularly at bank branches, but are less common in rural areas. Sinhala, Tamil, and English are widely spoken throughout Sri Lanka, though English proficiency may be limited in very remote villages.
