Basel SwitzerlandCruise Port Guide
Getting Around from the Port
From St. Johann terminal (primary cruise terminal, north bank): tram 11 runs to Marktplatz/Old Town in 15–20 minutes; fare CHF 2.80 (single) or CHF 9.20 (day pass). From the Dreiländereck dock on the south bank: trams connect easily to the center. The Day Card for Basel's transit is excellent value. Taxis cost CHF 25–40 to Old Town. The Old Town itself is very walkable once you arrive. Free city bikes (Velopass) are available at rail stations.
Attractions and Activities
Basler Münster (Cathedral, free): 12th-century Romanesque-Gothic cathedral with Rhine-view terrace from the towers and Erasmus's tomb. Kunstmuseum Basel (€26): Switzerland's oldest public art museum with exceptional Holbein collection and major modern/contemporary holdings. Fondation Beyeler Riehen (€30, 20 min by tram 6): world-class private museum with Monet, Picasso, Klee, and Warhol in Richard Meier building. Dining & Shopping
Basel's Marktplatz morning market (Mon–Sat) sells Swiss cheeses, Landjäger dried sausage, and Basel Leckerli (spiced gingerbread — Basel's signature sweet since the Middle Ages). Restaurant Gifthüttli (1845) near the Münster serves traditional Swiss-German fare: Basler Mehlsuppe (flour soup, traditionally eaten at Carnival), Zwiebelbrot (onion bread), and Rhine salmon. Café Spitz for pastries. Das Bürgerhaus for fine dining. Shopping: Freie Strasse for retail; Spalenberg for antiques and boutiques. Swiss chocolate (Läderach is based near Basel), Swiss watches, and Basel Leckerli are top souvenirs.
Weather
Basel on the Rhine in Switzerland is visited on river cruises with a temperate continental climate; the river cruise season runs from April to October when temperatures range from 57°F to 77°F (14–25°C). Spring and fall offer particularly pleasant conditions for exploring this art city. Pack layers for spring and fall, and lightweight clothing for summer; a compact umbrella is useful as summer thunderstorms are possible.
Safety
Basel is very safe by any measure. The pharmaceutical industry presence means excellent infrastructure. Pickpocketing is rare. Note: this is Switzerland — prices are significantly higher than Germany or France. CHF 20–30 for a main course is normal.
Currency and Language
Swiss Franc (CHF). Basel is Switzerland and does not use the Euro — though some restaurants near the German/French borders may accept Euros at poor rates. ATMs widely available; use them for CHF. Credit cards universally accepted. Prices are approximately 20–30% higher than equivalent German cities.
