Ko Samui ThailandCruise Port Guide
Getting Around from the Port
From Nathon Pier, the town center of Nathon is immediately accessible by foot, with shops, markets, and local eateries within a 5-10 minute walk. For reaching other parts of the island, several transport options are available:
- Songthaews: These are shared pickup trucks with benches in the back, serving as the island's public transport. They operate on set routes around the island. Fares are negotiable but generally range from 50-200 THB per person depending on distance. They can be hailed anywhere.
- Taxis/Private Vans: Taxis are readily available at the pier. Fares are typically fixed and should be negotiated before starting your journey. Expect to pay 400-600 THB to Chaweng Beach (approx. 40-50 mins), 500-700 THB to Lamai Beach (approx. 60-70 mins), and 300-500 THB to Big Buddha Temple (approx. 30-40 mins). Private vans can be hired for half or full-day tours, offering more flexibility.
- Motorbike Rentals: Motorbike rentals are common but not recommended for cruise passengers due to limited insurance coverage and the risk of accidents on unfamiliar roads.
- Car Rental: Car rentals are available, but driving on the left-hand side, heavy traffic, and local driving habits can be challenging. A valid international driving permit is required. Renting a car for a limited port day is generally not advised unless you are very comfortable with local conditions.

The monsoon season, from May to November, brings higher humidity and occasional heavy rain showers, though sunny periods are still common. Pack light, breathable clothing, swimwear, a hat, sunglasses, and high-SPF sunscreen.
Safety
Ko Samui is generally safe, but common sense precautions are advisable. Be aware of traffic when crossing roads, as motorbike and car traffic can be heavy and unpredictable. Negotiate taxi and songthaew fares before starting your journey to avoid overcharging. Petty theft can occur, so keep valuables secure and out of sight. Be cautious of unsolicited offers for tours or services, especially from unknown individuals.
Currency and Language
The local currency is the Thai Baht (THB). Credit cards are widely accepted at hotels, larger restaurants, and shops in tourist areas, but cash is preferred and often necessary for smaller purchases, street food, and local transport (songthaews, small taxis). ATMs are readily available throughout the island, including in Nathon.
