Getting Around from the Port

The port is within walking distance of Gabes town. For exploring the unique oasis, a horse-drawn carriage tour is a recommended and unique option.

To reach Chenini du Gabès, located 4km (2.5mi) west of Gabès and known for its beautiful basketwork, you should leave Gabès on the Sfax road, turn left just before the bridge over the Oued Gabès, and then follow the signposts. Tour operators also provide transport as part of their programs to local sites like Chenini, the Djara market, handicraft shops, and the Museum of Customs and Popular Mores of Sidi Boulbaba. The Regional Tourism Office organizes excursions to Matmata and El Hamma.

Gabes is also well-known for its henna, a colored paste used for temporary body tattoos (especially on hands and feet for Tunisian wedding ceremonies) and for coloring hair. The Djara market is particularly famous for henna. Be aware that most shops are closed on Friday afternoons.
