Dalyan Cruise Port Guide
Dalyan, a charming town in Turkey's Mugla Province, serves as a tender port for cruise ships. This area is designated an environmentally protected zone, renowned for its stunning natural beauty and rich historical sites. The ancient city of Caunos, with ruins dating back to the 3rd Century, is a key historical attraction. The Dalyan Channel, which links Koycegiz Lake to the Mediterranean, meanders past impressive Rock Tombs and through dense reed beds, some reaching 3 to 5 meters in height. These unique wetlands, a mix of fresh and salt water, support diverse aquatic life and are a haven for numerous bird species including Sparrowhawks, Cranes, Kingfishers, and Jays.
Getting Around from the Port
Upon tendering ashore in Dalyan, you will find various local transport options. A regular dolmus (minibus) service connects Dalyan to nearby resorts such as Fethiye and Marmaris, as well as surrounding villages. For reaching the popular Iztuzu Beach, both dolmus and boat services are available directly from Dalyan. The Turtle Sanctuary, located at the far end of Iztuzu Beach, can also be accessed by dolmus or private car.
Attractions and Activities
- Iztuzu Beach (Turtle Beach): A pristine 5 km sandbar known for its fine crystal sands and shallow turquoise waters, ideal for swimming. This beach is a vital nesting site for endangered Loggerhead (Caretta caretta) and Green (Chelonia mydas) sea turtles, with nesting season running from May to October. At one end of Iztuzu Beach, a Turtle Sanctuary rehabilitates injured turtles, which can be viewed in large tanks. Access is via regular dolmus or boat from Dalyan, or by car to the sanctuary end.
- Dalyan Channel & Ancient Kaunos: Explore the scenic Dalyan Channel by boat, passing impressive 3rd-century Lycian Rock Tombs carved into the cliff faces. The channel leads to the ruins of the ancient city of Kaunos (or Caunos), offering a glimpse into its long history.
- Mud Baths: Experience the local mud baths, featuring warm sulfur pools known for their therapeutic properties—a unique outdoor spa experience. It is advisable to compare independent excursion options with those offered by your cruise line to ensure the best value and experience for your visit.
Dining & Shopping
While no specific shops or restaurants are noted directly at the tender landing point, the town of Dalyan itself will offer various dining options and local shops for souvenirs and other purchases. The reference guide does not specify local specialties or price ranges.
Currency and Language
The local currency in Turkey is the Turkish Lira (TRY). While Euros (EUR) and US Dollars (USD) are widely accepted in coastal tourist areas and larger cities, it is recommended to carry some Turkish Lira, especially if you plan to venture beyond the immediate resort areas.
