Getting Around from the Port
Cruise ships calling at Alpena typically dock at the Thunder Bay River waterfront or the city marina, both of which place passengers within easy walking distance of the downtown core. The Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center is approximately a 10-minute walk from the dock. Taxis and rideshares are available but rarely necessary for downtown sightseeing, as Alpena's compact central district is very walkable. For excursions to Dinosaur Gardens State Park (about 20 miles south on US-23) or Thunder Bay Island, rental cars and pre-arranged tour vehicles are needed. The glass-bottom boat Lady Michigan departs from the municipal marina and offers two-and-a-half-hour narrated shipwreck tours — a round-trip shore excursion that requires no additional transit.

Alpena on Lake Huron has a continental climate with cold, snowy winters and a warm summer cruise season from June to September, when temperatures average 64°F–73°F (18–23°C). The Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary with its historic shipwrecks is the main attraction. Pack lightweight summer clothing and layers for cooler evenings, along with a light rain jacket.

Alpena is a safe, low-crime community and one of the most visitor-friendly ports in the Great Lakes system.
