Back

Sir Bani Yas is a natural island off the southwest coast of Abu Dhabi, serving as a dedicated cruise destination. Ships dock directly at "Cruise Beach" thanks to a new jetty built in February 2022, which significantly speeds up disembarkation. Be aware that strong winds can occasionally lead to port cancellations.

The 1.5-mile long Cruise Beach is well-equipped for visitors, featuring hundreds of palm trees, shaded cabanas, and over 2,000 sunbeds spread across 387,500 square feet. Complimentary amenities like parasols, wooden sun loungers, and freshwater showers are available. The beach is divided into sections, offering a children’s play area and an inflatable aqua park for families, as well as more secluded areas with spa services and cabanas for relaxation. Adjoining the beach is a lush mangrove lagoon, perfect for kayaking or paddle-boarding, where you might spot nesting ospreys or flamingos. Roughly half of Sir Bani Yas Island is dedicated to the Arabian Wildlife Park, home to approximately 13,000 animals indigenous to the Arabian Peninsula, including endangered Arabian Oryx, Sand Gazelle, Mountain Gazelle, and predators like the Sudan cheetah and striped hyena.

Getting Around from the Port

Your ship docks directly at Cruise Beach. The island is the destination itself, and there is no "town center" to walk to. All excursions on the island must be booked directly onboard your cruise ship, as independent tour arrangements are not possible. A complimentary shuttle service is provided to the Anantara Sir Bani Yas Island Resorts (a 20-minute ride) where additional sunbeds and umbrellas are available. Apart from this, there is no public transport or taxi service available for independent exploration of the island.

Attractions and Activities

Given the limited independent options, most activities are cruise line organized or available at Cruise Beach:

  • Jeep Safari / Game Drive Tour: This is the most popular activity on the island, offering a chance to see the Arabian Wildlife Park's diverse animal population, including the endangered Arabian Oryx. These tours are highly sought after and often sell out quickly, so book early onboard.
  • Beach Relaxation & Watersports: Enjoy the extensive Cruise Beach with its complimentary sun loungers, parasols, and freshwater showers. For families, there's a children's play area and an inflatable aqua park. More active guests can explore the mangrove lagoon by kayak or paddleboard, with opportunities to spot local birdlife like ospreys and flamingos.
  • Anantara Resort Visit: Take the complimentary 20-minute shuttle to the Anantara Sir Bani Yas Island Resorts. Here, you can access additional sunbeds and umbrellas, and potentially enjoy the resort's facilities (check with the resort for guest access policies). Free WiFi is available at the resort.
  • Spa Services: A more remote section of Cruise Beach offers spa services and cabanas for a relaxed experience.

Note that most excursions other than the jeep safari receive generally negative reviews, so choose wisely. Remember, all tours must be booked onboard your ship.

Dining & Shopping

Dining on Sir Bani Yas is straightforward and convenient. Food is served free of charge at multiple barbecue stations located on the island. Additionally, your onboard drink packages are honored at the six beach bars scattered along Cruise Beach. There are no independent restaurants or significant shopping opportunities beyond what your cruise line might offer at the beach setup.

Currency and Language

The local currency is the United Arab Emirates Dirham (AED), often abbreviated as dhs. The Dirham is pegged to the US Dollar, meaning its exchange rate against the USD is stable. While no ATMs are mentioned on the island, given that food and drinks are covered by your cruise or are complimentary, you are unlikely to need local currency for basic services at Cruise Beach. Credit cards are generally accepted at the Anantara Resort, but for small purchases (if any are available) cash might be useful.
