Wala VanuatuCruise Port Guide
Getting Around from the Port
Upon arrival at the tender dock, villagers will meet you to offer guided tours of the 3-4 villages on the island. These tours showcase local customs and crafts, with demonstrations along the way. While there isn't a fixed price for these village tours, you'll find collection boxes or similar setups at various points for voluntary contributions, typically coins.
For those wishing to explore the surrounding waters, islanders also offer rides on traditional outrigger canoes for approximately $5 USD per person.
Attractions and Activities
- Guided Village Tour: Villagers meet you directly at the tender dock to lead tours through 3-4 villages. These immersive experiences offer insights into local life with cooking and hunting demonstrations, traditional ceremonies, and historical explanations. Dining & Shopping
There are no formal restaurants or cafes directly at the port or within the villages. However, Wala is an excellent place to find very good quality local handicrafts. You can purchase these unique souvenirs from local markets and stores found within the villages you visit.
Weather
Wala Island off the coast of Malekula has a hot, tropical climate year-round with temperatures between 77°F and 88°F (25°C to 31°C). Cruise visits occur primarily from May through October during the dry season when calmer seas facilitate tender operations to this small island. Pack light swimwear, reef-safe sunscreen, and a light rain layer.
Safety
When swimming or snorkeling in the waters around Wala and Rano, it is strongly advised to wear reef shoes to protect your feet from coral and other potential hazards.
Currency and Language
